The Camelback Kid (TCK), producer of the critically-acclaimed one-actor Off-Broadway production "CAROL CHANNING" IN CONCERT, has announced that the New York City production, recently starring Richard Skipper, has gone on temporary hiatus after Mr. Skipper informed TCK that he is no longer available for performances.

Forty-seven years (not to mention over 5,000 performances) later and 3,000 miles away, patrons of the Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles were able to revisit a little bit of theatrical history as Jerry Herman's first Dolly, Ms. Carol Channing, again entered through parting red curtains and took the stage wearing her original 1964 gown in celebration of her 90th birthday.

But when he comes to visit her this week to celebrate his birthday, Carol requested he do a special show as himself - and how could he say no to Carol? I imagine Richard Skipper must approach his embodiment of Carol Channing a bit differently than most successful female celebrity impersonators. When doing Barbra or Eartha or Ethel there are certain idiosyncrasies one can latch onto and exaggerate as punch lines. Channing, however, has always presented herself on stage as a sort of self-satire. To broaden up what is already such an extreme can easily slip into vulgar mockery.
