With spirited campiness in abundance - and the sumptuous physical trappings provided by designers Anthony Popolo and Billy Ditty - The Rocky Horror Show takes over the Boiler Room Theatre for the month of October, giving audiences a rose-tinted view of a fantastical world full of transsexuals, transvestites and other-worldly aliens. In short, it's just another night over at the Frankenstein place.
The small and intimate Altarena Playhouse has got something big and outrageous to sing about and it's proving that little can sometimes be better if it's done right. Tucked away in the quiet suburban city of Alameda on the East Bay side of San Francisco, this Playhouse is packing them in - and for good reason - they are rockin' the house with an electrifying, must-see production of The Rocky Horror Show.
Judging by opening night at the Old Globe, San Diego, fan reaction to Richard O'Brien's The Rocky Horror Show is every bit as over-the-top silly as the attention paid to the 1975 cult film retitled The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Rocky Horror is a 1973(London)/74(LA)/75(Broadway) sendup of early sci fi, class B horror films and offers a curiously appealing view of some gay and wildly campy transgender lifestyles. Fans dress up as Rocky, Dr. Scott, Frank 'n' Furter and the Phantoms and scream obscenities and corny comments at the characters on stage. They also cover their heads with newspapers to avoid the rain, wave flashlights back and forth and move instep to 'The Time Warp' in the aisles. It was 1977 midnight showings of the film that started this audience participation trend, which shows no signs of stopping.
The Theater Company of Hoboken (TTC) and Parlour Productions team up to present an outrageous romp into the foray of Burlesque and TV Game Shows in A NIGHT AT THE PARADISE BURLESQUE NEXT WEEKEND.
Boston's Gold Dust Orphans brings Rocky Horror to the stage. When clean cut Brad and Janet get stranded on the side of the road and seek help from the Frankenstein Place, they super-naturally get a touch-a-touch more than they bargained for! Dr. Frank'n'Furter (Ryan Landry) and his nasty bunch of lust-loving lingerie junkies are in the midst of a MAN-iacal experiment and baby, there is NO escape!
A Georgia production of THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW, playing at Atlanta's Plaza Theatre has just been shut down by local political leaders for being overly offensive and too risque. After the mayor, Wayne Garner, was shown a video of the show in rehearsal, officials decided that an R-rated farce was not suitable for a city-owned venue, and the production was stopped.
