Today in 1938, The Cradle Will Rock opened at the Windsor Theatre. Originally a part of the Federal Theatre Project, it was directed by Orson Welles, and produced by John Houseman. The show was recorded and released on seven 78-rpm discs in 1938, making it the first cast album recording. Following the impromptu opening and a brief run at the Venice Theatre (later renamed the New Century Theatre) in July 1937, the production reopened on January 3, 1938, at the Windsor Theatre under the auspices of the new Mercury Theatre Company. It played a total of 108 performances.

Dowen, who has been collecting records since he was 13 years old, will share some of his thousands of recordings in a powerpoint presentation about the life of one of the most prolific singers in the history of music. A bass with a rich, smooth and sonorous voice, Pinza spent 22 seasons at New York's Metropolitan Opera, appearing in more than 750 performances of 50 operas. A popular recording star, Pinza went on to appear on Broadway, in Hollywood movies, and on television in his own series and daytime variety shows that were popular in the 1950s.

Dance Masters Gordon Peirce Schmidt and Laura Berman of RPM Productions present An American Portrait choreographed by Gordon Pierce Schmidt, as the opening night performance for Dance Chicago at the Athenaeum Theatre, 2936 N. Southport Ave. Saturday, Oct. 19 at 8 p.m. The piece, inspired by Winslow Homer's classic American painting "Snap The Whip" is danced to Aaron Copland's timeless masterpiece "Appalachian Spring." An American Portrait voices the power of the land and the people who tamed it and has been hailed as an emotional treat for audiences since its premiere in 2003. Also on the evening's program - all choreographed by Gordon Peirce Schmidt - will be Get Out Your Handkerchief with music by Christian Woehr, Bonhom with music by Christopher Rouse, Trois with music by Jean Sibelius and excerpts from Journee des Tziganes with music by John Jorgenson. This October, the New Museum will present 'Chris Burden: Extreme Measures,' an expansive presentation of Chris Burden's work that is the artist's first New York survey and his first major exhibition in the US in over twenty-five years. Burden's epoch-defining work has made him one of the most important American artists to emerge since 1970. Spanning a forty-year career and moving across mediums, the exhibition presents a selection of Burden's work where physical and moral limits are called into question. 'Chris Burden: Extreme Measures' will be on view from today, October 2, 2013, to January 12, 2014.
