Full title, The Persecution & Assassination of Jean-Paul MARAT as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de SADE Set in 1808 in the asylum of Charenton, Marat/Sade explores mental health, revolution, and what it means to be 'free'. Structured almost entirely as a 'play within a play' - led by the direction of the Marquis de Sade - the inmates of Charenton relive and retell the horrors of the French Revolution, all the while grappling with their own internal and external realities.
