The joint production of Santa Fe and Opera Philadelphia, Theodore Morrison's opera of the decline and fall of Oscar Wilde has its hits and misses. It's a magnificent production of an unripe work.

BWW Review: THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST and the Importance of Purposeful Triviality
by Maggie Yates - Feb 20, 2015

Wilde's play about the triviality of Victorian culture has been produced everywhere, by everyone. It's a staple of the English-speaking theatrical repertory in the way that “Don't Stop Believing” is a staple of the karaoke repertory. Mercifully, 'Earnest' has the potential to be a great play—the main characters all share Wilde's gift for witticism; the play is purposeful in its absurdity; and it's intelligently written.

Toss together James Joyce, Vladimir Lenin, and Dadaist poet Tristan Tzara in Zurich in 1917 (where they really were), throw in limericks and lyrics and The Importance of Being Earnest, then shred the whole melange through the mixed-up mind of an aging British civil servant (who has a big grudge against Joyce concerning a pair of trousers), and you've entered the Wilde-ly witty world of Travesties.
