BWW Blog: Parker Hughes - Work It, Darling
by Guest Blogger: Parker Hughes - Feb 17, 2016

Inspiration comes from strange places! For me, it seems to come from people saying profound things on accident. Today's 'out of context life lesson' comes from Rupaul's Drag Race contestant and all-around wonder woman, Mrs. Kasha Davis. Do yourself favor and check this lady out, because she is an absolute doll. Sweet, funny, talented, and charismatic, Mrs. Davis is a terrific entertainer and personality. The other day she appeared on YouTube's WOWPresents's segment "Ring My Bell," where callers can phone in and speak with drag icons. Right off the bat, Mrs. Davis shows her wise and caring side when a caller named Houston requests some advice for people just starting out in drag. She tells them, "Number one: there's a lot of gals out there that have paved the way - watch them, get some ideas, pull from those. Number two: practice, practice, practice! And number three - just own it! Whatever it is you're going to do, own it and love it and everyone will too!"

BWW Review: THE IMPORTANCE Original Studio Cast Recording
by Jenny Ell - Feb 16, 2016

Originally staged in 1984, The Importance remains the only musical adaptation of Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest to run in London. After a limited run here, the production found a new lease of life in Peterborough two years later under a different title, Born in a Handbag. This recording has been a labour of love with over twenty years in production and is being released by Stage Door Records at the end of this month.

BWW Preview: MKE Ballet and Michael Pink Elevate Ballet Culture in World Premiere of Wilde's DORIAN GRAY
by Peggy Sue Dunigan - Feb 15, 2016

If as Oscar Wilde wrote, 'Beauty is a form of genius, indeed a higher form of genius, and needs no explanation,' the Milwaukee Ballet and Michael PInk affirm this statement with a resounding performance of their World Premiere ballet Dorian Gray. Based on Wilde's late 19th century novella, Pink and his 'dream team,'--Lighting Designer David Grill, Composer Philip Fenney and Costume/Scenic Designer Todd Edward Ivins--sparked magical genius in the first full length ballet staged in the Historic Pabst Theater. Ivins spoke the essence of the moment when he stated, 'A historic occasion in a historic theater.'

BWW Review: As Much 'Skillduggery' as 'Skullduggery' in A GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE TO LOVE AND MURDER at the Orpheum
by Joseph Baker - Feb 10, 2016

A GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE TO LOVE AND MURDER must have been a 'labor of love' for Robert L. Freedman, who wrote the book: After all, it is derived from the brilliant 1949 British comedy classic KIND HEARTS AND CORONETS, which benefited immeasurably by performances by Dennis Price, Joan Greenwood, and -- most especially -- the brilliant Alec Guinness, whose impersonation of all the victims was a tour de force. Yet, A GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE, with wickedly droll music and lyrics by Steven Lutvak, is a deliciously poisonous bon bon all its own. It's as if Joseph Kesselring's ARSENIC AND OLD LACE had somehow melded with Oscar Wilde's THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST, and somewhere 'up there' (or 'down there,' whatever the case may be) writers like Roald Dahl and directors like Alfred Hitchcock must be smiling at the production currently delighting audiences at the Orpheum.
