Emmy winning actress/singer Vicki Lawrence hardly needs an introduction. Having co-starred on The Carol Burnett Show for 11 years (1967-1978) and then star of Mama's Family in '83 and then 86-90, she has established herself as one of TV's most endearing comediennes. Lawrence will appear at the Welk Resort in Escondido from May 19-22 in her one-woman - oops! I mean two character - show as herself and of course, Mama. In our chat she talks about her show, Mama, Harvey Korman and lots of other fun legendary memories.
Whether you're a flower child of the 60's or an Internet child of the 90's, it is likely that you have heard about the hit musical Hair, or at very least heard some of the iconic numbers from the show like "Aquarius" or "Let the Sunshine In." But regardless of how much audiences come to the theatre knowing about Hair, they leave having experienced something electric, powerful and unique. And leading the "tribe" is free-spirited and energetic Berger, everyone's best friend and resident "bad boy." When Hair arrives at The Fabulous Fox Theatre on May 17th, wearing Berger's trademark loincloth and "long, beautiful hair" will be Steel Burkhardt, a veteran of five previous versions of the show. We had the chance to chat with Steel about the show, playing Berger, and baring your soul on stage in more ways than one.
"Tale as old as time.." as the title song so beautifully tells us, but when Beauty and the Beast returns to the Fabulous Fox Theatre January 12 - 16, Atlanta audiences are in for something new. The hit Broadway musical has been tweaked and updated and this newly reworked tour is sure to please. Inviting audiences to "Be Our Guest" in this new production is actor Merritt David Janes who plays the fiery Lumiere. We caught up with Merritt and chatted about his career, the updates to the show and what it's like playing a candlestick.
Today, we are talking to the versatile and multi-talented Tony-winning actor who has recently found television superstardom following his turn as the Russell Edgington, King of the Tennessee Vampires, on HBO's hit series TRUE BLOOD, but he has also proven himself to be equally at home on the big screen - as can be clearly seen in his impressive turns in 21 GRAMS, GARDEN STATE, CHARLIE WILSON'S WAR, MILK and more. Discussing his penchant for the dark side as well as his musical comedy side - such as his unforgettable performance in Joe Mantello's ASSASSINS and opposite Christina Applegate in the recent revival of SWEET CHARITY - Denis O'Hare makes clear his adoration for the theatrical form and his undying - make that undead - devotion to his craft. This extensive chat certainly gives us a lot of grist and meat to chew on. Be sure to catch O'Hare eight times a week on Broadway in ELLING, which opens today.
Coming off a wildly successful four-week summer Perfecto residency at Las Vegas' Rain Nightclub in Palms Hotel and sold-out Electric Zoo festival gig, Germany's ATB is already gearing up for another tour across the U.S. and Canada.
When the opening chords of a familiar Beatles tune drifts out of the doors of the Fabulous Fox Theatre on September 17th, passers by might just think they stepped back in time 40+ years to Liverpool, England. And if they come see RAIN - A Tribute to the Beatles presented by Theater of the Stars September 17 - 19 they might just succeed in that time travel. RAIN - A Tribute to the Beatles, a show that has been called "the next best thing to seeing The Beatles," boasts a repertoire of Beatles favorites, ranging from such beloved songs as "I Want To Hold Your Hand" and "Hey Jude" to classic hits including "Revolution" and "Come Together." Playing all those familiar songs, in the guise of George Harrison is Joe Bithorn who will be a part of the show when it returns to Atlanta. I caught up with Joe to learn a little more about his journey.

She's equally at home on the theatrical stage, at Carnegie Hall and in the recording studio, having released several solo CDs - her latest entitled simply Natalie Toro. In our interview, she discusses her role in Heights, her new cabaret show - which will premiere in LA at the Magic Castle's Inner Circle on July 12 - and other roles and theatrical passions.
According to ContactMusic.com, Adam Lambert has asked his fans to donate money to a charity in place of sending him gifts, which they do routinely. Lambert tweets: 'Been doing lots of thinking... Last year on the road I received so many thoughtful gifts from all of you. But I very quickly ran out o' (of) room...Instead of giving me gifts, why not donate 2 donorschoose.org or other charity in my name? U can print a receipt 4 me and personalize it.'
Even the presence of Melissa Gilbert - who so memorably played 'Half-Pint' in the Little House TV series of the 1970s and '80s and now is cast as Caroline Ingalls - can't save this musical from mediocrity. Try as they might, Gilbert and her castmates unfortunately just can't get past Sheinkin's overly earnest and plodding book, Portman's completely unmemorable score or Di Novelli's clumsily crafted lyrics. Sheinkin's book does offer some glimmer of hope: There are some lovely moments to be found in the script, but they are too few and far between. Portman's score fares worse, since there is not one melody that can be recalled and all the musical numbers sound alike. Di Novelli's lyrics are even worse. When 'I'm sick with wind sickness' is the only lyric you can remember, you know the show's in trouble. And, clearly, the material is not served well by director Francesca Zambello's seemingly uninspired staging (save for some creatively conceived horse-racing sequences).
The 'Bright Side of Life' will light up for just two more weeks as The Tony and Grammy Award-winning MONTY PYTHON'S SPAMALOT makes its final stop (after an almost four year national tour run) at the Orange County Performing Arts Center on October 6 - 18. As a special closing treat, John O' Hurley (TV's Seinfeld, Dancing with the Stars, and Family Feud) will reprise the role of King Arthur for its final set of performances. Orange County correspondent Michael Lawrence Quintos recently spoke with cast members Paula Wise and Christopher Gurr about their long, soon-to-end journey with the hilarious musical comedy.
