American Theatre Wing Gala Raises Nearly $700,000

The American Theatre Wing (William Ivey Long, Chair; Heather Hitchens, Executive Director) announced today that its annual gala, held last night at the Plaza Hotel, was the most successful in the organization's history, raising nearly $700,000 (besting the previous record, which was set in 2012, by approximately $100,000). All proceeds from the evening will benefit the education and outreach programs of the American Theatre Wing, which include SpringboardNYC, the Theatre Intern Group, the National Theatre Company Grants and the Jonathan Larson Grants, and will also support free access for students, aspiring professionals, and the general public to programming on AmericanTheatreWing.org, including the long running television show "Working in the Theatre."

Odyssey Theatre Ensemble presents In My Corner, a singular new play byLizbeth Hasse and Joe Orrach that works boxing, tap dance and music into the story of a street smart, wise guy Puerto Rican kid from New York City who comes of age in the ring and at the barre. Jeremiah Chechik (Benny & Joon, Diabolique) directs Orrach in an exhilarating performance that takes off to the beat of an original score by Matthew Clark, performed live on stage by Clark on piano, Eugene Warren on bass and percussionist Ronnie Gutierrez. In My Corner opened for a nine-week run at the Odyssey Theatre on Sept. 6. BroadwayWorld has a first look at the production below!

The hilarious Gary Gulman will take to the stage at Comix At Foxwoods for four performances from Thursday, Oct. 3 to Saturday, Oct. 5. Gulman will keep audiences laughing at 8 p.m. each night throughout the weekend, before ending things on a high note with a 10:30 p.m. performance on Oct. 5.

Burning Coal Theatre Company Announces 8-Week Classes for Adults

Burning Coal Theatre Company's artistic director, Jerome Davis, will conduct an eight week acting class based on the concepts the legendary acting teacher, Uta Hagen. The class will take place Mondays from 7 to 10 pm, June 10 through July 29th. The class is a scene study class which emphasizes ideas discussed in Ms. Hagen's landmark book Respect for Acting. Winners were announced last night, Monday, May 6, 2013, at the 2013 James Beard Foundation Awards, the nation's most prestigious recognition program honoring professionals in the food and beverage industries. During a ceremony hosted by popular American actor Oliver Platt at Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall, awards in the Restaurant and Chef and the Design categories were presented, as well as a number of special achievement awards.
