Sarah Joy Miller & More Set for New York City Opera's 2013-14 Season

New York City Opera is pleased to announce casting for numerous roles in its 2013-14 productions: Anna Nicole, a co-production with BAM that kicks off the 2013 Next Wave Festival, September 17 - 28 at the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House; Johann Christian Bach's Endimione, February 8 - 16, 2014 at El Museo del Barrio; Bluebeard's Castle, a co-production with St. Ann's Warehouse, February 28 - March 15, 2014; and The Marriage of Figaro, April 19 - April 26, 2014 at New York City Center. The Company will announce additional casting soon.

BRIGADOON Among Film Society of Lincoln Center's Summer Lineup

The Film Society of Lincoln Center has announced the July and August lineup for Family Films with screenings of several of the most beloved Hollywood musical's of 40s and 50s starring classic silver screen icons, led by Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland!

BWW Interviews: Naomi Goldberg Haas

Naomi Goldberg Haas is a dancer, master teacher, choreographer and director of DVP. She is the creator of Variable Pop Expressive Dance Method and Movement Speaks - a Community Collaborative Dance Program. Highlights from her work in theater, opera and film include collaborations with The Klezmatics, composer Michael Nyman, playwright Tony Kushner, directors Brian Kulick and Oskar Eustis and Disney animation. Her work with the Silesian Dance Theater and persons with disabilities was presented in 2010 at the International Contemporary Dance Festival in Poland and in 2011 at Chutzpah Festival in Vancouver, B.C. Recent projects include Golem with the Czech American Marionette Theater for the 50th anniversary of La Mama etc. She formerly danced with Pacific Northwest Ballet and holds an MFA from Tisch Dance at NYU. She has taught dance at Cal State, Long Beach and Loyola Marymount University and currently teaches at NYU, the Harkness Dance Center at the 92 Y and in DVP's programs.

American Ballet Theatre Opens SYLVIA Tonight

Casting for the final two weeks of American Ballet Theatre's 2013 Spring Season at the Metropolitan Opera House has been announced by Artistic Director Kevin McKenzie.

Director Terry Carter Set for KATHERINE DUNHAM Screening, Discussion at Moving Image Today

On the occasion of the 104th anniversary of Katherine Dunham's birth, Museum of the Moving Image will present a work-in-progress screening of a new documentary about the pioneering modern dancer and choreographer, by renowned actor and director Terry Carter (Battlestar Galactica, Julia), and followed by a town-hall discussion about Dunham's legacy with Carter and two celebrated Dunham dancers, Julie Belafonte and Dr. Glory Van Scott. The discussion will be moderated by Warrington Hudlin, a Museum trustee and former Dunham drummer. The program today, June 22, 2013, at 3:00 p.m. is part of Changing the Picture, sponsored by Time Warner, Inc., an ongoing series that celebrates and explores the work of film and television artists of color who are bringing diverse voices to the screen.

Liars & Believers to Bring ICARUS to NYMF 2013, 7/23-28

Greek mythology meets burlesque, puppetry and a modern Americana score in ICARUS, the latest original theatrical presentation from acclaimed Boston-based ensemble Liars & Believers. Creators of last year's gritty NYMF hit Le Cabaret Grimm, Liars & Believers will present ICARUS as part of the 2013 New York Musical Theatre Festival.

THEATER TALK to Celebrate James Gandolfini & Richard Griffiths, 6/22

On two separate broadcasts in the tri-state area this weekend, THEATER TALK celebrates master critic John Simon's 88 years with an interview, recorded on his birthday in May of this year, and pairs it with an encore interview with the late actor Richard Griffiths.

Tyler Bernstine, Gibson Frazier & More Set for Playwrights Horizons' MR. BURNS

Complete casting has been announced for the Playwrights Horizons (Tim Sanford, Artistic Director; Leslie Marcus, Managing Director) New York premiere production of MR. BURNS, A POST-ELECTRIC PLAY, a new play by Anne Washburn (The Internationalist), with music by Obie Award winner Michael Friedman (Saved, The Drunken City at PH; Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson). Directed by Obie Award winner Steve Cosson (Gone Missing, This Beautiful City, founding Artistic Director of The Civilians), MR. BURNS will be presented as the first production of the theater company's upcoming 2013/2014 Season.

Martin Vidnovic & Alison Woods to Star in BEND IN THE ROAD at NYMF, 7/18-28

BEND IN THE ROAD, a new musical comedy, is an official selection of the New York Musical Theatre Festival's (NYMF) 2013 Next Link Project. Benjamin Endsley Klein directs a cast of 14 including Alison Woods (THE FANTASTICKS) as Anne Shirley, Jordan Barrow, Mimi Bessette (BONNIE AND CLYDE), Brandon Essig, Kasie Gasparini, Justine Huxley (MAX AND RUBY), Anne Kanengeiser (RAGTIME), Kevin Ligon (SISTER ACT), CJ Pawlikowski, Maureen Silliman (PICTURES IN THE HALL), Chelsea Stavis, Martin Vidnovic (GUYS AND DOLLS, FOOTLOOSE, THE KING AND I, OKLAHOMA!, BABY, BRIGADOON), Rachel Weintraub (“Saturday Night Live”), and Whitney Winfield (SHREK).

Peter Schneider to Direct MATA HARI IN 8 BULLETS at NYMF, 7/8-20

New York: MATA HARI IN 8 BULLETS is an official selection of the New York Musical Theatre Festival. Conceived and composed byDavid Rhymer, lyrics Blake Brooker and David Rhymer, choreographed by Odette Heyn directed by Peter Schneider and starringOnalea Gilbertson as Mata Hari. MARRY HARRY is an official selection of the 2013 New York Musical Theatre and will be presented by the New York Musical Theatre Festival. MARRY HARRY has a book by Jennifer Robbins, music by Dan Martin, lyrics by Michael Biello, music direction by Christopher McGovern, choreography by Wendy Seyb, and is directed by Kent Nicholson. MARRY HARRY will play at The Alice Griffin Jewel Box Theatre at The Pershing Square Signature Center, beginning July 19 - July 28. Linda Balgord & Ali Gordon to Lead CROSSING SWORDS at NYMF; Full Cast Announced!

The 2013 New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF) AND Forte Musical Theatre Guild present Crossing Swords a world premiere musical comedy by Joe Slabe, nominated for five Betty Mitchell Awards and three Calgary Critics' Awards. NYMF veteran Igor Goldin directs a cast of five including Linda Balgord (Bway: The Pirate Queen, CATS, La Cage, Gypsy standby for Patti Lupone; Nat. Tour: Sunset Boulevard), Ali Gordon (Regional: Fiddler on the Roof, You're a Good Man Charlie Brown), Steven Hauck (Bway: Irena's Vow), Lyle Colby Mackston (Papermill: 25th Annual...Spelling Bee), and Marrick Smith(New York: Love's Labour's Lost). Crossing Swords is being staged at The Romulus Linney Courtyard Theatre at The Pershing Square Signature Center, 480 West 42nd Street (bet. 9th & 10th Avenues) in NYC for five performances from Monday, July 22 through Sunday, July 28, 2013.

Shakespeare in the Parking Lot to Present CYMBELINE in the Municipal Parking Lot, 7/11-27

Hamilton Clancy, Artistic Director of The Drilling Company, chose 'Cymbeline' as the opening show of the 2013 season of Shakespeare in the Parking Lot because it portrays a divided world that is magically healed. The play is a hopeful fable to invoke at a time when the world seems so irrevocably torn, with our own country so polarized and the Middle East ripping itself apart in hopeless religious conflicts. Performances will be July 11 to 27 in the Municipal Parking Lot at the corner of Ludlow and Broome Streets.

This week THEATER TALK, features our annual Tony Wrap up, an AndrewAndrew report from the TONY Red Carpet and a discussion about J.B. Priestley's lost theatrical gem Cornelius. Co-hosted by Michael Riedel of the New York Post and producer Susan Haskins, this episode premieres Friday, June 14, 2013 at 1 AM (Saturday morning) on Thirteen/PBS, and repeats in the New York metro area on CUNY TV* Saturday at 8:30 PM, Sunday at 12:30 PM, and Monday at 7:30 AM, 1:30 PM, and 7:30 PM.
