SHAKE 38 Kicks Off 4/23 in Celebration of Shakespeare's 450th Birthday

'All the world's a stage' penned William Shakespeare, and St. Louisans will hold him to it by reading, painting, dancing and singing their way through the Bard's 38-play canon during the fifth annual SHAKE 38 April 23-27. Rats & People Motion Picture Orchestra will kick-off the event by performing a 'musical response' to Love's Labour's Lost at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23, the Bard's 450th birthday, at the Festival headquarters (5715 Elizabeth Ave.).

STAGES St. Louis Celebrates Success of 2013 APPLAUSE Gala

On Friday, November 15, 2013 STAGES ST. LOUIS hosted the twelfth annual APPLAUSE! Gala at the Ritz-Carlton, a benefit to support the organization's Education and Artistic Programs. APPLAUSE! 2013 raised proceeds of over $356,000. This year's numbers come on the heels of another record-breaking season, which generated nearly $2 million in ticket sales, out-grossing any season in STAGES' 27-year history. The event was hosted by STAGES stars Kari Ely and David Schmittou. Lynne Turley and Lisa Nichols served as event Co-Chairs.

2013 St. Louis Arts Awards Set for January 21

Sheldon Art Gallery Presents PETER PRANSCHKE: THE LONELY RAINBOW

St. Louis-based artist Peter Pranschke presents an installation of recent works that reflect on everyday life narratives. Pranschke often works on an intimate scale, using ballpoint pen or colored pencil, defining the edges of his drawings by cutting the sheets into irregular shapes. Exhibited collectively, his drawings present accounts of personal experiences, sometimes embellished, but rooted in biography.

Organized by the Sheldon Art Galleries, the exhibition Legends of St. Louis Blues Music tells the story of the rich history of blues music in St. Louis through biographies on key musicians, illustrations by Kevin Belford, photographs by Jennifer Silverberg, Charley Taylor, Bob Shelli and Photo Joe, ephemera, recordings and memorabilia such as Johnnie Johnson's electric piano, among other rarities. Building on its key role in ragtime music, St. Louis was a gathering place for early blues musicians like Roosevelt Sykes, Peetie Wheatstraw, Henry Townsend, and Victoria Spivey, among other luminaries. This exhibition uncovers important St. Louis musicians, songs and blues music styles that have influenced our musical heritage, including jazz, rhythm and blues, soul, rock and roll, and a continually evolving blues tradition.
