CJO to Welcome Pianist Monty Alexander This Spring

The Chicago Jazz Orchestra (CJO) under the direction of Artistic Director, Jeff Lindberg, presents its spring concert series beginning with its April 11th performance featuring pianist Monty Alexander. Alexander will be featured in a performance of his own special brand of American jazz, popular song and music from his native Jamaica, performing with the 17-piece CJO.

Grace Kelly Quartet to Play Harris Center, 2/28-3/1

'I've heard the future of jazz and it is Grace Kelly' (NPR) and audiences at Harris Center for the Arts will have a chance to hear for themselves as the Grace Kelly Quartet comes to Folsom. Grace Kelly's prolific career includes seven albums, four ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Awards and two Boston Music Awards as Jazz Artist of the Year, all while still in her teens. She was named one of the top ten college women musicians in 2011 by Glamour Magazine and garnered accolades from jazz luminaries such as Wynton Marsalis, Dave Brubeck, Harry Connick, Jr., and Phil Woods.

Monty Alexander to Kick Off Celebration of Jazz and Reggae at the Blue Note, 1/21

In a career spanning five decades, pianist Monty Alexander has built a reputation exploring and bridging the worlds of American jazz, popular song, and the music of his native Jamaica, finding in each a sincere spirit of musical expression. This January, he will come to Blue Note Jazz Club to present a lineup of collaborative shows that combine the worlds of jazz and reggae in perfect harmony.

Garth Fagan Dance to Return to Joyce Theater, 11/12-17

Garth Fagan's love of strong women is front and center in "No Evidence of Failure," which receives its world premiere when Garth Fagan Dance returns to The Joyce Theater, November 12-17. The two-program season also features the world premiere of "Gin," marking Norwood Pennewell's third work for the company. The season's revivals include Fagan's 1983 classic "Easter Freeway Processional" and "Senku," whose music will be played live by concert pianist William Chapman Nyaho. Also slated for Fagan's New York season are sections from last year's hit "Lighthouse/Lightning Rod," as well as Fagan's perennial opener "Prelude: Discipline is Freedom"

MSO Opens Pop Season with Ella, Louis and All That Jazz Tonight

The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra opens the 2013.14 Pops season with Ella, Louis, and All That Jazz tonight, October 11-13, 2013 at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts. Guest conductor Jeff Tyzik leads the orchestra, featuring Byron Stripling, trumpet; Marva Hicks, vocalist; and Robert Breithaupt, drums. In tribute to Ella, Satchmo, and Fats Waller, the concerts include favorites such as S'Wonderful, It Don't Mean a Thing, What a Wonderful World, and selections from Gershwin's Porgy & Bess.
