John Wiley and Sons, Inc., today announced the publication of Data Smart: Using Data Science to Transform Information into Insight (Wiley, 978-1-118-66146-8, November 2013, US $45.00). The phrase 'data science' gets thrown around in the press like it's magic. English conductor Jane Glover will make her Met debut on December 16 leading the company's holiday presentation, an abridged, English-language production of Mozart's The Magic Flute, directed by Julie Taymor. The 100-minute version of Taymor's popular staging of the opera will star Alek Shrader as the brave prince Tamino; Heidi Stober as Pamina, the princess he must rescue; Eric Owens as the mysterious Sarastro; Shenyang as the Speaker; and Nathan Gunn as the hapless bird-catcher Papageno. Albina Shagimuratova and Kathryn Lewek will alternate in the role of Pamina's vindictive mother, the Queen of the Night. The Magic Flute launched the recent Met tradition of presenting a family-oriented production each holiday season, with sharply discounted tickets and two special weekday matinee performances. On Sunday, Nov. 10 at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the 2013 Houston Cinema Arts Festival will present the world premiere of a new documentary on the rich five-decade history of Houston Ballet - Houston Ballet: Breaking Boundaries - at 4:00 p.m. An encore screening of the film will be held at Sundance Cinemas on Monday, Nov. 11 at 6:45 p.m. Both screenings are free and open to the public. No advance tickets will be issued. Attendees should arrive at the venue 30 minutes prior to the screening for the best chance of being seated.

Segerstrom Center's 2013 - 2014 International Dance Season opened with the world premiere of Diana Vishneva: On the Edge, which introduced two new works commissioned by the Center and Ardani Artists for the internationally renowned and award-winning star of the Mariinsky Ballet and American Ballet Theatre. On the Edge is in two acts, and begins with Jean-Christophe Maillot's intriguing piece titled Switch, followed by Carolyn Carlson's profound solo work, Woman in a Room. After this world premiere engagement in Segerstrom Hall, On the Edge will make its European premiere in December at both the National Centre for Contemporary Choreography in Roubaix, France and in Monte-Carlo's Salle Garnier as part of the Les Ballet des Monte-Carlo dance season. There will also be performances in 2014 at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow in March and at Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg in April. Scroll down for photos from the performances!

Bernard Labadie will return to the New York Philharmonic to conduct Mozart's Requiem; J.S. Bach's Cantata No. 51, Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen!; and Handel's 'Let the Bright Seraphim' from Samson. The program's soloists will include soprano Miah Persson, mezzo- soprano Stephanie Blythe, tenor Frederic Antoun in his Philharmonic debut, bass Andrew Foster- Williams, Philharmonic Principal Trumpet Philip Smith, and the New York Choral Artists directed by Joseph Flummerfelt. The concerts will take place tonight, November 7, 2013, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, November 8 at 8:00 p.m.; and Saturday, November 9 at 8:00 p.m.
