Broadway vet Martin Sheen will take the stage as 'Don Quixote' in a one-night-only benefit production of the musical MAN OF LA MANCHA on November 27, 2015.

UC Irvine's Claire Trevor School of the Arts Department of Drama presents the classic Broadway musical, Man of La Mancha, November 14 - 22, 2015. The show marks the first performance in the 'Care/Cure/Corruption' Series for the 2015-16 Drama season. The production also marks the department's return to the Irvine Barclay Theatre stage.

Inspire Theatre, Northwest Arkansas' newest professional theatre, announces its premier production, Man of La Mancha. Helmed by award- winning theatre director Christopher Murrah, the production is a departure from the large-scale tradition of the musical, utilizing an ensemble of 9 actors to tell the story of prisoners held in limbo during the Spanish Inquisition. While awaiting their own trials the prisoners are visited by Miguel de Cervantes, a poet and playwright, who spins the tale of Don Quixote de La Mancha and his squire, Sancho Panza. Through Cervantes' imaginative stories, windmills stand as giants, taverns become castles, and a scullery maid is treated with the respect and honor due a noble. The prison, once oppressive and stagnant, begins to open up as the community within frees their minds of "facts" and begins to seek "truth" through their own forgotten generosity and spirit.

The Omaha Community Playhouse opens its 2015-2016 season with MAN OF LA MANCHA, the multiple-Tony Award winning musical based on the novel Don Quixote. Written by Dale Wasserman with music by Mitch Leigh and lyrics by Joe Darion, the story tells of Miguel de Cervantes and his imprisonment during the Spanish Inquisition. Cervantes enlists his fellow prisoners into the telling of Don Quixote, knight errant, and his escapades as he fights for valor. I caught the preview last night and I have to warn you-it would be a mistake to miss this one.

The Marriott Theatre, Chicagoland's longest-running professional musical theater, announces its 2016 Season!  The award-winning theatre will present both premiere productions of recent Broadway hits, and classic revivals in 2016.  Joining returning directors Nick Bowling (The King & I) and Rachel Rockwell (October Sky) Marriott Theatre announced four directors who will be bringing their fresh and exciting perspectives to the unique, intimate Marriott stage for the very first time, William Brown, Amanda Dehnert, Don Stephenson and Aaron Thielen.  They will be joined by choreographers Matt Raftery and Alex Sanchez, and musical directors Ryan T. Nelson and Doug Peck on the creative teams.

What is interesting about Quixote, though, is that he is not a knight at all, but a man soon considered by the masses to be delusional - a complete lunatic to believe that knights are still in existence and can be of some heroic use amongst men when such people seem hopeless causes for which to fight. Yet, what is so beautiful about Miguel de Cervantes' unyielding hero (for that is what he is nonetheless) is that he teaches an incredibly valuable lesson: if one can find beauty in this world, a true hero will fight to attain it, regardless of what mockery may belittle his efforts and what perils may confront him (in whatever form they may come). With this said, the Academy Playhouse's production of Man of La Mancha is a beautiful rendition of a beautiful tale that audiences should flock over to see.

Today in 1972, the first Broadway revival of Man of La Mancha opened at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre, where it ran for 140 performances. Man of La Mancha is a musical with a book by Dale Wasserman, lyrics by Joe Darion and music by Mitch Leigh. It is adapted from Wasserman's non-musical 1959 teleplay I, Don Quixote, which was in turn inspired by Miguel de Cervantes's seventeenth century masterpiece Don Quixote. It tells the story of the 'mad' knight, Don Quixote, as a play within a play, performed by Cervantes and his fellow prisoners as he awaits a hearing with the Spanish Inquisition.The original 1965 Broadway production ran for 2,328 performances and won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The musical has been revived four times on Broadway, becoming one of the most enduring works of musical theatre.
