Review - The Legend of Julie Taymor, or The Musical That Killed Everybody!

The obligatory Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark spoof that everyone figured would be a part of the 2011 New York International Fringe Festival obviously did not benefit from a series of workshops and readings before making its debut at the Bleecker Theatre. This one had to be a rush job.

Confirmed: GHOST THE MUSICAL to Open on Broadway April 2012

Earlier this month, Ghost the Musical announced that it was releasing an additional 350,000 tickets for sale, as the show officially extended bookings in the West End until October 2012. Today, the New York Times has confirmed earlier reports and rumors and it's now official that the show will open on Broadway in April of 2012 at a 'Nederlander Theater to be determined.' There is no specific word yet on casting, dates, etc.

RIALTO CHATTER: Bobby Cannavale to Star (and Sing!) in NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT?

Tony Award nominee Bobby Cannavale might soon return to Broadway in the Kathleen Marshall-helmed NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT, according to the NY Post. Cannavale would join the previously announced Matthew Broderick in the musical, and is currrently taking singing lessons to prepare for the role. No official casting announcement has been made.

THE BOOK OF MORMON & The Return of HAIR Set for This Week on Theater Talk

HAIR: Then and Now will play on Thirteen Friday, August 19th at 1:00 AM. A celebration of Hair, the 'tribal love-rock musical' now a Tony Award-winning revival back on Broadway for the summer. Our guests include the show's composer Galt MacDermot and co-lyricist/librettist James Rado, who wrote the show's enduring rock score (with the late Gerome Ragni). Also on the program, actor Gavin Creel, who was nominated for a Tony for his portrayal of Claude, the role originally created in the Sixties by Rado. Creel, Rado and MacDermot perform the first act finale song 'Where Do I Go?' with MacDermot's son, Vince, on the bongos.

RIALTO CHATTER: Will MATILDA Hit Broadway in 2013?

Michael Riedel reports in the New York Post this morning that The Royal Shakespeare Company's production of Roald Dahl's Matilda The Musical, which is slated to transfer to London's Cambridge Theatre on October 18 of this year, is lined up for Broadway in 2013. Riedel explains that Matilda director Matthew Wachus is hoping to bring the show in then so that he can focus on moving his other West End property, Ghost, to Broadway next season.

TV: GHOST THE MUSICAL Bound for Broadway in April 2012?

Stratford Shakespeare Festival's new production of Jesus Christ Superstar opened at The Avon Theatre on Friday June 3rd to outstanding reviews with audiences and critics alike raving about this magnificent new take on the now four decade old show. Directed by Des McAnuff, the show tells the story of the last week of Christ's life. Since the show's opened, there has been a flood of theatre insiders travelling to Toronto to see the show to discuss moving it to Broadway.

Michael Riedel reports in today's New York Post that Nicolas Cage is considering a Broadway box next year starring in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's next in a new production produced by Robert Cole and Fred Zollo who last produced the Daniel Craig, Hugh Jackman production of A Steady Rain.

RIALTO CHATTER: LYSISTRATA JONES Broadway-Bound Next Season with Off-Broadway Cast, Opening Nov. 10 ?

As first reported by Michael Riedel in the New York Post, the Off-Broadway hit musical LYSISTRATA JONES, which closed on Friday, June 24 at the Judson Memorial Church, is hoping to move to Broadway (with a search led by General Manager Alan Wasser) in the fall with a budget between $6-7 million at a small house, ideally the Broadhurst or the Walter Kerr. Confirming this buzz is an Equity EPA notice today for roles under a Broadway minimum contract. Auditions for all roles and understudies will be taking place on July 22 and July 25 at Pearl Studios.

Hugh Jackman in Concert Gunning for Broadway this Year?

Michael Riedel reports in the New York Post today that Hugh Jackman's one-man concert, Hugh Jackman in Concert, could be gearing up for a Broadway engagement as yearly as this year. The concert, which opened to raves in San Francisco this spring and even greater praise in Toronto on July 5, has been the source of Broadway buzz for months. No doubt the Broadway favorite will be welcomed back warmly.

JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR Headed to Broadway Spring 2012?

Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice both travelled to see the show and came away from their experiences - wildly enthusiastic. Now, Michael Riedel in the New York Post has picked up on the trail this morning, and he adds fuel to the fire that has the show likely to come to Broadway in the Spring of 2012.
