Some shows in the Christmas theatre canon are taken from classic stories such as A Christmas Carol, while others perhaps form a more original holiday tale. And then there are the special few that can only be described as "cult-classic." In A Christmas Story, we once again meet little Ralphie and his family as he hopes for a Red Ryder Carbine Action BB Gun from Santa - or at least his parents. From the infamous scene at the flag pole to the leg-lamp in the window for all the neighbors to see, this current production at BDT Stage has it all for those wishing to live out a live version of their favorite Christmas movie.  (more...)

The Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities will open its 43rd theatre season with the hit Broadway musical Mamma Mia! directed by Rod A. Lansberry, on Friday, September 7, 2018. Mamma Mia! is based on the songs of ABBA, one of the most popular international pop groups of all time. It follows a young bride's quest to discover the true identity of her father and the story unfolds to hilarious consequence when she invites three men from her mother's past to her wedding. Since its premiere in 1999, it's been performed in over 40 countries, and every day, there are at least seven performances being staged somewhere in the world. Rehearsals Underway for 5th Avenue Theatre's THE SOUND OF MUSIC

Rehearsals started this week at The 5th Avenue Theatre for the exultant classic musical, Rodgers & Hammerstein's The Sound of Music, the iconic show sweeping Seattle for the holidays. Boasting such beloved songs as 'Do Re Mi,' 'My Favorite Things,' 'Sixteen Going on Seventeen,' and 'Climb Ev'ry Mountain,' this production of Rodgers & Hammerstein's The Sound of Music will be presented as only The 5th can do, complete with a sensational live orchestra, stunning costumes, and incredible sets. Under the direction of David Bennett and with choreography by Trina Mills and music direction by Kat Sherrell, this musical will feature an exuberant all-local cast of fresh faces and favorite performers that includes Anne Allgood as the Mother Abbess, joining the previously announced David Pichette as Max Detweiler and Jessica Skerritt as the Baroness Elsa Schraeder, with Hans Altwies as Captain Georg von Trapp and Kirsten deLohr Helland as Maria. The year is 1977 and Disco is the name of the game. Brooklyn is overrun with small gangs and poverty, but club 2001 Odyssey is the oasis that all the well-dressed dancing youths flock to. Inside the doors of the club, the rules change, and dreams are made and broken on the glowing dance floor. Arvada Center has taken on this regional-premier musical based on the cult classic film, and with its many challenges, Saturday Night Fever is a high-energy show that dazzles the audience with is spectacle and glam. There's something to be said for seeing a company of incredible dancers performing the classic "A Chorus Line" especially when they're doing much of the original Michael Bennett choreography as is currently being presented at the 5th Avenue Theatre. Even better when you've got an entire company of incredible singers as well. You've almost got the triple threat that the show needs to be great. Unfortunately it's that third element, the acting, where the 5th Avenue's production falls a little short and so the story of these Broadway gypsies suffers a bit. (more...)
