The Canadian Opera Company announced today a new mainstage commission: The Old Fools by celebrated Montreal-based composer Ana Sokolovi? and seasoned British librettist Paul Bentley. La Reine-Garcon, first announced in 2015, is moving forward as a co-commission with the Opera de Montreal; it's the first mainstage collaboration of its kind between the two major Canadian opera companies and at its helm are two exceptional Canadian artists: Julien Bilodeau as composer and Michel Marc Bouchard as librettist.

Richard Strauss' twisted psychodrama, Elektra, returns to the COC stage with commanding star soprano Christine Goerke in the title role. Rooted in classic Greek tragedy, the one-act opera is an expressionist take on the ultimate tale of family dysfunction: Elektra's lust to avenge her father's murder at the hands of her mother and her mother's lover. Fury and obsession spiral into horrific consequence as Elektra careens down a path of total destruction, all set to an unrelenting modern score. Elektra runs for seven performances on January 26, 31, February 6, 10, 12, 16, 22, 2019.

Theatre francais de Toronto is pleased to present the seventh edition of its hit series Les Zinspires. Directed by Chanda Gibson for the third consecutive time, Les Zinspires: L'age de raison (The Age of Reason) will be presented at the Berkeley Street Theatre from November 29 to December 7, 2018 with General Audience Performances featuring English Surtitles on November 30 and December 5 at 8pm.

Puppetmongers Theatre proudly returns to Tarragon Theatre to celebrate its 29th anniversary of delightful Winter Holiday performances with their audience favourite Bed & Breakfast this December. The Old Globe in association with Yonge Street Theatricals will present a by-invitation-only industry reading of the new musical Life After on Thursday, December 6 at 2:00 p.m. and Friday, December 7 at Noon at Ripley Grier Studios in New York City. The reading will help the creative team prepare for the musical's upcoming American premiere this winter at The Old Globe in San Diego, where it will run from March 22 to April 28, 2019.

Berkeley Repertory Theatre today announced the full cast and creative team for Paradise Square: An American Musical. The world premiere is helmed by acclaimed director Moises Kaufman, with choreography by the legendary Bill T. Jones and a book by Marcus Gardley, Craig Lucas, and Larry Kirwan. Music by Jason Howland and Larry Kirwan, with lyrics by Nathan Tysen, and based on the songs of Stephen Foster. Paradise Square is produced by special arrangement with Garth H. Drabinsky in association with Peter LeDonne and Teatro Proscenium Limited Partnership.

Expect Theatre's PlayME - the podcast that transforms Canadian plays into audio dramas - and Canada's #1 podcaster, CBC Podcasts, announce a new partnership that will see the popular series joining the CBC Podcasts slate for its upcoming new season. RED SNOW COLLECTIVE presents the World Premiere of THE MONKEY QUEEN, written by Diana Tso, directed by William Yong, and performed by Diana Tso and Nick Eddie. The production weaves text, movement, visual art and music, and reimagines the ancient tale through the playwright's own personal journey as a Chinese-Canadian female artist. THE MONKEY QUEEN runs from November 15 - December 2, 2018 at the Theatre Centre Incubator (media night on November 16 at 7:30pm).

Young People's Theatre will present Green Thumb Theatre's The Code - an impactful production about the effects of social media on personal relationships. Written by award-winning playwright Rachel Aberle, and recommended for ages 13 & up, The Code will be presented in the Studio November 27 to December 14, 2018.

A new musical is being developed by a Nova Scotian writing team that will feature songs originally made famous by Anne Murray, the Grammy-award-winning singer from Springhill, Nova Scotia. The show just underwent a 2-week developmental workshop in Halifax with an 11-member cast of actors. The workshop culminated in a staged reading presentation at the Bella Rose Arts Centre this past Friday. 

ProArteDanza has been dazzling Canadian audiences with its signature, full-throttle physicality and emotionally resonant contemporary ballet performances since 2004. Season 2018 features the world premiere of Figaro 2.0, a full-evening dance work co-choreographed by the company's award-winning duo: Artistic Director Roberto Campanella and Artistic Associate Robert Glumbek. Figaro 2.0 runs at Harbourfront Centre's Fleck Dance Theatre in Toronto from Thursday November 1 - Saturday November 10. Figaro 2.0 draws inspiration from the wit and drama of Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro with a contemporary focus that explores the battle of the sexes, infidelity and, ultimately, the human condition - with some surprising twists from the original story along the way.

DanceWorks is pleased to present the world premiere of The art of degeneration, choreographed and performed by the award-winning Toronto-based dancer/choreographer Louis Laberge-Cote. Multidisciplinary and thought-provoking, The art of degeneration runs from Wednesday, October 31 to Saturday, November 3 at The Citadel, in Toronto's Regent Park/Cabbagetown neighbourhood at 304 Parliament St.

It is with a mix of both excitement and sadness that Nightwood Theatre's Board of Directors announces the departure of Artistic Director Kelly Thornton. Kelly will be stepping down from her position in order to take on the role of Artistic Director of Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre in Winnipeg. Royal MTC is Canada's oldest regional theatre, and produces 10 plays on two stages, a regional tour of Manitoba and Northwest Ontario, a wide range of youth programming and two annual festivals: the Master Playwright Festival, and North America's second-largest Fringe, the Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival.
