On Sunday September 11 Cristina and Matthew Ballestero, real-life siblings, presented their first cabaret Sibling Rivalry @ Sterling's Upstairs at Vitello's to a packed house of screaming fans. Both Cristina and Matthew were in LA's Next Great Stage Star 2011 and came exceedingly close to being runners-up. Each has a distinct personality and an enormous talent...and those talents are every bit as different as their personas. Combined there was enough energy to blow the roof off Vitello's. Cristina's voice has a tremendous range, but she is concentrating her efforts in the pop field; Matthew has a big bold baritone/tenor instrument that is perfectly suited to Broadway standards.
Long before the stage saw puppets having sex and Ugandans confronting Mormons, there was JERRY SPRINGER: THE OPERA, a joyously foul-mouthed stage musical that's as much of a hilarious guilty pleasure as its title suggests. The Chance Theater in Anaheim Hills is the latest American regional theater to take on this racy, over-the-top show. Due to popular demand--and, frankly, rightly so--this surreal musical's run has been extended through August 14. At the height of its popularity, Jerry Springer's eponymous TV program which inspired this reverent parody cornered the market in shocking reveals, loud on-stage brawls, and outrageous fringe parades. So the idea that this low-brow talk show-slash-circus sideshow has somehow been immortalized into a musical theater piece--specifically an Opera, perhaps the most high-brow of the Arts--attracts nothing less than amusing curiosity.
Following six weeks of fierce competition among 20 of California's finest young musical theatre performers, LA's Next Great Stage Star 2011 celebrated Judy Mora's outstanding victory at the 5th annual competition's glittering Finale on Sunday, February 6, presented by Sterling's Upstairs at Vitello's, the most critically acclaimed, award-winning supper club of its kind in greater Los Angeles. Runners up included San Francisco's Michael David (2nd place); Matthew McFarland (3rd place); Emily Goglia (4th place); and Reba Buhr (5th place). Broadway World's Dean Butler was there to capture the three and a half hour event ... off and on stage - which also included a Special Guest Star performance by musical theatre, television star and pop composer/singer Blake McIver Ewing.

LA's Next Great Stage Star 2011 began its six-week run through February 6 this past Sunday, January 2, 2011 @ Sterling's Upstairs @ Vitello's. It was a long first show, due mostly to some unforseen technical issues, but boasts 20 very talented vocalists, well worth checking out in the weeks ahead.
