First Night's Top Ten of 2017 - critic Jeffrey Ellis' annual review of the best in Tennessee theater - were revealed tonight during a live Facebook broadcast at 7:30 p.m. (CST), with Actor's Bridge Ensemble and Studio Tenn/TPAC leading the nods in this year's listing of categories.
Chaffin's Barn Dinner Theatre - the nation's longest running and continually operating dinner theater - has been sold just as the company is nearing the completion of its 50th season of shows in Nashville.
While there are always rumors of closings and real estate transactions happening willy-nilly, Chaffin's Barn continues to thrive and to entertain and to give both audiences and theater folk an opportunity to get to know one another better and to be transported and transformed via the magic of live theater. I hope that Chaffin's Barn Dinner Theatre remains a vital part of Music City long after I've been reassigned to review shows in the afterlife.
Have you decided on your Halloween costume yet? You better get to work since it's only four days until the big night is upon us and you won't want to caught with your pants down, so to speak. May we respectfully suggest a trip to your local, neighborhood theater? Not only will you be entertained, transformed and transported - we're willing to be on this happening - but you'll also probably get some great costume ideas in the process! And there is the added bonus that the theater company might be in the business of renting out costumes which would make your efforts even easier than you first thought…

2015 First Night Honoree Martha Wilkinson directs - with musical direction by Tim Fudge, and choreography by Curtis Reid and Lauri Gregoire - the first collaboration from Music City Theatre Collective and Metro Parks Theatre Department of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma!, running at the Centennial Park Bandshell June 17-July 2.
The New York Musical Festival (NYMF) presents The First Church of Mary, The Repentant Prostitute's FIFTH ANNUAL!!! Benefit Concert, Revival and Potluck Dinner, a new musical about faith, narcissism and red velvet cake with book and lyrics by Geoff Davin, additional music and lyrics by Nicole Boggs & KelleyAnn Hocter & additional music by David Mescon. Martha Wilkinson directs a cast of six, including Geoff Davin, Megan Murphy Chambers, Jennifer Whitcomb-Oliva, Brooke Leigh Davis, Rosemary Fossee, and Michael San Miguel. The First Church of Mary is being staged at the June Havoc Theatre, 312 West 36th Street, 1st Floor in NYC for five performances from Monday, July 18 through Friday, July 22, 2015.

Is it just me or is everyone else amazed by how quickly 2016 seems to be moving - in a theatrical sense, at least - and what with Memorial Day Weekend upon us, we're gobsmacked (gobsmacked, I tell ya!) by the wide range of productions offered up by Tennessee theater companies this weekend. Included are Street Theatre Company's Assassins, Center for the Arts' 42nd Street down in Murfreesboro, Rumors out at Chaffin's Barn Dinner Theatre and the final performance of The Sparkley Clean Funeral Singers at Cumberland County Playhouse.
