Broadwayworld.com had the pleasure of attending a tribute event for Marjorie Guthrie, the Huntington Disease Society of America (HDSA) founder. Marjorie's inspiration to help others stemmed from the fact that her husband, music icon Woody Guthrie, suffered from the disease until his death in 1967. 2017 marks 50 years of the Guthrie family legacy.

Odyssey Opera Continues Joan of Arc season with Trial at Rouen 12/1

At the vanguard of Boston's classical music scene, Odyssey Opera and the Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP) present the world premiere of the live performance of The Trial at Rouen by Norman Dello Joio. A semi-staged, English-language production led by conductor Gil Rose, The Trial at Rouen unites Odyssey Opera (one of the nation's most innovative opera companies), BMOP (the nation's premier orchestra dedicated exclusively to commissioning, performing, and recording new orchestral music), and internationally renowned singers Heather Buck (Joan of Arc) and Stephen Powell (Pierre Cauchon). This marks the third and most condensed opera of Odyssey Opera's Trial by Fire: Joan of Arc and the Hundred Years' War, a season-long exploration of operatic works inspired by martyr, saint, and military leader Joan of Arc.

Garth Fagan Dance has four premieres up its sleeve for its Joyce Theater engagement, November 7-12. Two of the new dances, In Conflict and Estrogen/Genius, are by Fagan, the Tony-winning choreographer of The Lion King; the other two premieres, Wecoo Duende and A Moderate Cease, are by the company's long-time dancer and Fagan muse Norwood Pennewell.

The core of Armitage's work centers on a series of dance 'dreamscapes' that take the viewer on a poetic journey to evoke mysterious landscapes of reverie, dream and altered consciousness. Her latest work, Halloween Unleashed: Dancing Bones, Tasting Darkness and the Skeleton Within, is a subversive comedy designed to spook adults and families in a live action rendition of Disney's 1929 animated masterpiece, The Skeleton Dance. Combined with images from the wild, capricious street theater of Haitian carnival, Halloween Unleashed offers punk attitude and visual high-jinx, in a dance where bones dance alone, shoes fly off feet, and skeletons turn into musical instruments.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the Lamentation Variations project- LamVar10: A Festival for New Work. Since its founding in 2007 by Graham Company Artistic Director Janet Eilber, the company has commissioned some of today's most noteworthy choreographers to create new works inspired by Graham's signature solo, Lamentation, originally created in 1930, on dancers of the company. These choreographers have included Lar Lubovitch, Michelle Dorrance, and Doug Varone, among others.

Meany Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Washington announced today that Lizt Alfonso Dance Cuba has cancelled its November 16-18, 2017 performances at Meany Hall. The company was unable to secure travel visas due to the recent suspension of visa processing at the U.S. Embassy in Havana. The company has been replaced by Soledad Barrio & Noche Flamenca, one of the world's top touring flamenco troupes.

Lar Lubovitch Dance Company Announces 50th Anniversary Season

The Lar Lubovitch Dance Company announces its 50th anniversary season at The Joyce Theater in New York City, April 17 22, 2018. The season will feature the world premiere of Wanderers as well as signature works from the Company's vast repertory, including Men's Stories: A Concerto in Ruin (2000), performed by Lubovitch's acclaimed Company of dancers. The Company will be joined by the Martha Graham Dance Company and dancers from the Joffrey Ballet, each performing seminal Lubovitch dances in honor of this milestone year.
