BWW Exclusive: The Scarce History of Tony-Nominated Female Writers by the Numbers

This year's Tony Award nominations feature a rarity: a Best Play category comprised of as many women as men. Surrounding Paul Vogel's INDECENT and Lynn Nottage's SWEAT, however, is a profusion of male-written work; of the Best Musical nominees, only one so much as includes a woman on its writing team (Irene Sankoff, COME FROM AWAY).

Oh, the traits and tendencies we inherit from our parents: Height, eye and hair color, athletic ability, intelligence, a pleasant singing voice, a distinctive laugh, diabetes . . . mental instability! That is in perplexing subject at hand in the Pulitzer Prize winning play Proof by David Auburn.

VIDEO: Watch Marisha Wallace Lead THE COLOR PURPLE Concert Curtain Call

The British Theatre Academy presents a charity gala performance of The Color Purple to raise money for young performers who cannot afford to train in performing arts. Recent performances have included The Secret Garden at The Ambassadors Theatre and Godspell at St Pauls Church, Covent Garden. This concert features a line-up of West End performers alongside a choir of children from the BTA.

BWW Review: Denver Center's SECRET GARDEN is darkly enchanting

For a children's story, The Secret Garden evokes the kind of emotions that could make grown men sob. At least, that's what me and my fiance did for a majority of Denver Center Theatre Company's current production.

BWW Review: THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY: Love or Marriage?

SpeakEasy Stage Company's Boston premiere of Marsha Norman's (Book) and Jason Robert Brown's (Music and Lyrics) adaptation of Robert James Waller's novel is elevated by the luminescent Jennifer Ellis and hunky Christiaan Smith. The libretto wobbles, but the leads and ensemble warble Brown's soaring score beautifully. Bring tissues.
