Kronos Quartet Returns for New Works, Today

On Today, February 11 at 7:30 p.m., San Francisco's celebrated Kronos Quartet returns to Zankel Hall for a program of new works, six of which were commissioned as part of Carnegie Hall's 125 Commissions Project, including the world premiere of Rhiannon Giddens's At the Purchaser's Option with Variations.  Additional commissioned works include Garth Knox'sSatellites; Kala Ramnath's Amrit (arr. Reena Esmail); Nicole Lizée's Another Living Soul; Tanya Tagaq's Sivunittinni (arr. Jacob Garchik); and Fodé Lassana Diabaté's Sunjata's Time(arr. Jacob Garchik) on which Diabaté will join the quartet on the balafon.

With six concerts over three days, KRONOS FESTIVAL 2017 showcases the innovations of the Bay Area's contemporary music community.

On May 14, Marcus Roberts & The Modern Jazz Generation close out the "Katrina -10 Years On" concert series, dedicated to the spirit of the people who suffered from one of the worst hurricanes in history. In this concert Roberts, famous for his dazzling, virtuosic playing that taps the full range of the jazz piano tradition, unveils The Modern Jazz Generation, an ensemble that features his trio mates - Jason Marsalis on drums and Rodney Jordan on bass - and a number of next generation jazz greats. The musicians are joined by special guest Wycliffe Gordon (tuba), who returns to Koerner Hall after recently appearing with Rene Marie.

This is the second in two sets of concerts in December which honor renowned arts patrons from early 20th century Paris - De Noailles' Bal Masque will be presented by BAC today, December 2 and Friday, December 4 at 8pm, featuring baritone Tyler Duncan and a world premiere by Mark Applebaum (www.bacnyc.org/performances/performance/masked-ball).

Festival General Director Nigel Redden has today announced the program for the 39th annual Spoleto Festival USA, taking place May 22 through June 7, 2015. Held in Charleston, South Carolina, the Festival includes the world premiere of the opera Paradise Interrupted composed by Huang Ruo and designed and directed by visual artist Jennifer Wen Ma, the American premiere and first performances in over 350 years of Francesco Cavalli's baroque opera Veremonda, l'amazzone di Aragona, and the first US performances of a new production of Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare's Globe directed by the company's Artistic Director Dominic Dromgoole and Tim Hoare.
