Steppenwolf Hosts Public Square Event With Sudhir Venkatesh Today, 11/4

What does it take to make it to the top? Hard work? Pure luck? A trust fund? Audiences are diving into these questions nightly at Steppenwolf Theatre Company's current hit production of Good People by David Lindsay-Abaire, directed by ensemble member K. Todd Freeman. Two days before the 2012 presidential election, Steppenwolf hosts Making Money: From the Black Market to the Board Room, a deeper conversation about the relationship between class, privilege and success featuring Sudhir Venkatesh, award-winning author, professor at Columbia University and Freakonomics contributor, who will share his insights with Steppenwolf Artistic Director Martha Lavey. Making Money: From the Black Market to the Board Room is on November 4, 2012 at 7pm in Steppenwolf's Downstairs Theatre (1650 N Halsted St). Tickets ($20) go on sale October 12 at 11am through Audience Services (1650 N Halsted), at 312-335-1650 or at steppenwolf.org. A limited number of $15 student tickets are available online using promo code "VENKATESH15". Limit 2 tickets per student; must present a valid student ID for each ticket.

Steppenwolf Extends GOOD PEOPLE Through 11/17

By popular demand, Steppenwolf Theatre Company extends the season opener, Good People by Pulitzer Prize-winner David Lindsay-Abaire, directed by ensemble member K. Todd Freeman. This "Four Star" (Chicago Tribune), "Highly Recommended" (Chicago-Sun-Times) production continues for five additional performances, through November 17, with the original cast of six intact. Steppenwolf Theatre Company Artistic Director Martha Lavey announced today additional casting for the 2012/13 Subscription and Steppenwolf for Young Adults seasons. Will Allan, Keith Kupferer and Lusia Strus join previously announced ensemble members Alana Arenas, Mariann Mayberry and Molly Regan, completing the cast of the season opener, Good People. The cast of the Steppenwolf for Young Adults production of The Book Thief features ensemble member Francis Guinan with Patrick Andrews, Amy J. Carle, Rob Fagin, Rae Gray, Dennis William Grimes, Nikki Klix, Ian Knox, Anthony-Jon LeSage, Clancy McCartney, Andy Monson, Mark Ulrich and Nicole Wiesner. Other additions to the 2012/13 slate include Sandra Delgado, Sandra Marquez, John Ortiz and Gary Perez in The Motherf**ker with the Hat, and Cheryl Lynn Bruce, Glenn Davis and Jacqueline Williams in Head of Passes. Edward Torres has also signed on to direct the Steppenwolf for Young Adults production of How Long Will I Cry?: Voices of Youth Violence (previously titled Oral Histories) with Artistic Consultant Kelli Simpkins.

Featured for the event are two expert storytellers, Tony Award-winning ensemble member Frank Galati and Pulitzer Prize-finalist E.L. Tony Award-winning ensemble member Frank Galati returns to the helm at Steppenwolf Theatre Company with his stage adaptation of The March, Pulitzer Prize-finalist E.L. Doctorow's novel about General William Tecumseh Sherman's Civil War march through Georgia. This marks Galati's Second Stage production of a Doctorow novel, following the highly-acclaimed musical Ragtime (1998). The much-anticipated production features a cast of 26 playing a mix of fictional and historical characters. The March begins previews April 5 (Opening Night is April 15; Press Performances are April 14 at 3pm and April 17 at 7:30pm) and runs through June 10, 2012 in Steppenwolf's Downstairs Theatre (1650 N Halsted St). Steppenwolf Theatre Company Artistic Director Martha Lavey announced today the 2012/13 Subscription Season, including a Steppenwolf-commissioned world premiere and the work of fifteen ensemble members. The season begins in Steppenwolf's Downstairs Theatre with David Lindsay-Abaire's Good People, directed by ensemble member K. Todd Freeman. Up next, ensemble member Anna D. Shapiro directs The Motherf**ker with the Hat by Stephen Adly Guirgis. In the Upstairs Theatre, ensemble member Austin Pendleton directs The Birthday Party by Harold Pinter. In April 2013, ensemble member Tina Landau directs the Steppenwolf-commissioned world premiere of Head of Passes by ensemble member Tarell Alvin McCraney, their first collaboration since the widely-praised The Brother/Sister Plays (2010). The season concludes with Belleville by Amy Herzog, directed by Anne Kauffmann.
