BWW Review: TITANIC is Huge at Servant Stage
by Marakay Rogers
- Oct 9, 2018
Servant Stage has done some great work, of course. They've put together delightful revues of everything from the Great American Songbook to gospel to bluegrass, and taken them on the road to nursing homes, parks, and other places that truly can use live professional entertainment. Over the past couple of years, however, they've also gotten more settled into single-location larger productions, still on their pay-what-you-will plan that gives them outreach to those who can't afford high ticket prices.

TRANSFIGURATION, A Solo Play By Michael Miller Coming Up In The United Solo Festival
by A.A. Cristi
- Oct 3, 2018
The United States, above all other countries, is beset with an epidemic of random killing, usually by a weapon which seems to have held a mythic aura in the American psyche since the arrival of the first Europeans. The gun is the weapon of choice for Americans who want to do harm, especially semi-automatic assault rifles which can be modified to be even deadlier than their makers' intentions. Most of us are exposed to the biggest massacres through the major media, the most recent of which are listed in the footnote below. If the scope, circumstances, and number of dead and wounded are not sufficiently shocking, it is important to know that multiple and mass shootings, if not consistently a daily occurrence, occur regularly several times a week. These are only reported locally, because the limited body counts don't merit national attention. Only a few days passed without an incident during the month of September, 2018, and not seldom multiple mass shootings occurred in one day, as one can see on Gun Violence Archive. It is only too true that we are living in an age of random, senseless mass murders.

by Audrey Morabito
- Oct 3, 2018
Pulitzer Prize-Winnng Sam Shepard's CURSE OF THE STARVING CLASS displays the lives of the working-class Tate family as they navigate everything from suffocating debt, to teenage crime, to marital distress and back again. Checking the fridge for food (that is never there) is a regular routine-turned-ritual in this household that is deteriorating from the inside out. Shepard's play explores what it means to be trapped in the cycle of the starving class. He writes about a family cursed by an outside force, a force that leaves the individuals involved no option to dissociate themselves from the identifying feature of the cursed: the familial bloodline.
