BWW Reviews: Shabach Enterprise's World Premiere of FLY IN THE WINDSHIELD is Engrossing, Lighthearted Drama
by David Clarke - Aug 2, 2013

There really is nothing like the opening of another show, especially when that show is a World Premiere production. Last night, an enthusiastic audience filed into MidTown Art Space to witness FLY IN THE WINDSHIELD, S. Denise O'Neal's first play in three years, brought to life. Several in the audience had attended the reading at Theatre Suburbia and were telling those who had not experienced her craft about how powerful and poetic S. Denise O'Neal's writing was. Needless to say the anticipation and stakes were high, and last nights audience received exactly what they wanted from the production.

BWW Reviews: Black Lab Theatre's CHINGLISH is the Must-See Event of the Season!
by David Clarke - May 10, 2013

Black Lab Theatre is closing their exciting 2012-2013 season with a provocative and hilarious Regional Premiere production of David Henry Hwang's 2011 play CHINGLISH. The fresh and poignant comedy is a timely exploration of the business and economic relationship between China and the United States. As this plot is so richly layered and absorbing, I'm reluctant to say much about it for fear of ruining the miraculous experience of watching the story unfold. At the opening of the show, Daniel Cavanaugh, owner of Ohio Signage, is making a presentation for the Commerce League of Ohio about doing business in China. The plot quickly flashes back three years and recounts his first trip to China as he hopes to score a contract to make the translated signs for a new Cultural Arts Center in Guiyang, China. Within a few scenes, the audience is mesmerized by the level of duplicitous intrigue and captured in the surreptitious game of trying to determine what team all the characters are playing for.

Cabaret Stars of the Present and Future Are Highlights of 2013 Nightlife Awards at The Town Hall
by Stephen Hanks - Jan 17, 2013

When it comes to the number of award shows staged in a given season, the film, TV and recording industry no longer leave New York Cabaret in the stardust. Kicking off a 10-week period during which the Big Apple cabaret scene will now feature four award ceremonies (including the first-ever BroadwayWorld.com Awards on February 21, the 28th annual Bistro Awards on March 4, and the 27th annual MAC Awards on March 21), the 11th annual Nightlife Awards (voted on by a select group of cabaret and nightlife writers and critics) was staged at The Town Hall on January 14 and, for the most part, was a pleasantly entertaining event. Co-produced by Max Weintraub and nightlife impresario Scott Siegel (Broadway by the Year, 11 O'Clock Numbers at 11 O'Clock, Broadway Ballyhoo, et al), this year's show featured the usual mix of nightclub singing legends, budding cabaret stars, solid veterans of musical theater, outstanding jazz vocalists, stellar instrumentalists, and quirky comedians, almost all delivering the goods under the smooth direction of Scott Coulter.

BWW JR: Rabbit Season Begins with Velveteen
by Erin Leigh Peck - Dec 3, 2012

Using some simple props, three versatile actors recreate the classic story of the Velveteen Rabbit. In the style of Peter and the Starcatcher, a few somewhat neutral objects are very believably turned into functional costume pieces and help tell the story in a way that is imaginative and delightful. The show was funny without being over the top and adapted slightly for modern audiences (the wind-up toys boast double-A batteries) without losing the flavor of the well-known book by Margery Williams.
