Stephen Colbert is not the only family member who wants a shot at holding political office. Last night his sister, Elizabeth Colbert-Busch, won the Democratice Party primary in a race to fill the vacated seat of now-Senator Tim Scott in the state's first district. She will face former South Carolina governor Mark Sanford in a special run-off election scheduled for May 7.

In last night's election, Colbert-Busch defeated her opponent Ben Frasier, while Sanford won the Republican candidacy. In 2009, Sanford resigned as the state's governor after it was revealed he was having an an extra-marital affair.

The host of the The Colbert Report on Comedy Central has vowed to do whatever he can to help his sibling win the election. In an interview with CNN's Jay Tapper on Monday, he commented, "I'm willing to, you know, break the jewel of my own creation to try to do something for her. I'm not worried about what it would do to me or my show to try to help her as myself -- not as my character, to help her as myself. And you know, if people think that's not the right thing for me to do, I don't care. It's my sister, and I'm willing to help her."
