PlayGround, the Bay Area's (and now Los Angeles') leading playwright incubator, will mark the opening of its twenty-fifth season with a special one-night gala celebration and performance, and the launch of a bold new partnership. In collaboration with NYC-based The 24 Hour Plays, PlayGround will present the inaugural The 24 Hour Plays: Bay Area, featuring fully produced and performed (i.e., off-book) performances of six original ten-minute plays by distinguished PlayGround alumni, written and developed over just twenty-four hours, and staged by an all-star cast of leading local directors and actors on Monday, September 17, at

The Public Theater announced today that the Mobile Unit, originally founded by Joe Papp in 1957 and currently touring to the five boroughs biannually, will expand in September to launch MOBILE UNIT NATIONAL with a free, four-week tour of Lynn Nottage's powerful Pulitzer Prize-winning play, SWEAT, directed by Kate Whoriskey. SWEAT, staged in its entirety, will tour to 18 Midwest cities across Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, and Wisconsin beginning Thursday, September 27 through Tuesday, October 23, 2018.

The Public Theater's production of Public Works' TWELFTH NIGHT, conceived by Kwame Kwei-Armah and Shaina Taub, music and lyrics by Shaina Taub, Choreography by Lorin Latarro, and directed by Oskar Eustis and Kwame Kwei-Armah, opened just last night, July 31, running through Sunday, August 19.

Center Theatre Group has announced the cast for "Sweat" by Lynn Nottage. The 2017 Pulitzer Prize-winning play will be presented at the Mark Taper Forum August 29 through October 7, 2018. Directed by Lisa Peterson, the opening of "Sweat" is set for September 5.

Shakespeare's Globe is delighted to announce the programme for 'Shakespeare and Race', a new festival of events opening 11 August. This is the first time in the Globe's twenty-year history that the topic will be explored in depth over a week. Curated to draw attention to and provide a platform for scholars, practitioners and educators of colour in the teaching, study and performance of Shakespeare, this festival will highlight the importance of race to the consideration of Shakespeare not only in his time, but more urgently, in our own. The festival includes a play American Moor by Keith Hamilton Cobb, a workshop entitled Staging Race and Diversity in the Shakespearean Theatre, The Sam Wanamaker Fellowship Lecture is to be given by Professor Kim F. Hall, a pre-show talk for Emilia with Morgan-Lloyd Malcolm, a panel discussion of actors who have played Othello, and an international symposium featuring Kimberle Crenshaw, Professor of Law at Columbia Law School and UCLA, who coined the term 'intersectionality'. The festival starts and finishes with two theatre productions, Voices in the Dark and Hip-hop Shakespeare Unplugged.

According to Entertainment Weekly, The Michael Jackson Estate and Columbia Live Stage have confirmed plans for a Broadway-bound Michael Jackson musical. The project will feature a book by two-time Pulitzer Prize-winner Lynn Nottage, and will be directed and choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon.
