Today in 1963, Oliver! opened at Broadway's Imperial Theatre, where it ran for 774 performances. Oliver! is a British musical, with script, music and lyrics by Lionel Bart. The musical is based upon the novel Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens. It premiered in the West End in 1960, enjoying a long run, a successful Broadway production in 1963 and further tours and revivals. It was made into a musical film in 1968. Major London revivals played from 1994-1998 and again from 2008-2011.

Human Race Theatre's 2012-2013 Eichelberger Loft Season continues with Alan Souza's uniquely revisionist version of Oliver!, Lionel Bart's play of an orphan who dared to ask for more. Exchanging the full orchestra of musicians and the workhouse full of children for a gifted cast of ten performers who play multiple roles, Souza reduces the story to its relevant core in a play within a play. Originally slated to perform until December 16, the run has been extended to add seven performances. Oliver! runs now through December 22, 2012. Get a first look at the show in the photos below!

Fifty years after he started writing it, Quasimodo, a major musical by Oliver! composer Lionel?Bart,will finally get its World Premiere at the King's Head Theatre in London in March 2013.

The Children's Playhouse of Maryland kicks off its 2012-2013 season with the musical Oliver! The play with music, lyrics, and book by Lionel Bart is an adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic novel "Oliver Twist." The musical will be performed 1 p.m. today, Sept. 15 - 16, 22-23, 29 -30 and 4 p.m. Sept. 23. in the J Building Lecture Hall at CCBC Essex, 7201 Rossville Blvd. The 4 p.m. show will be sign-language interpreted by students from the CCBC Catonsville Interpreter Preparation Program. Tickets are $10 general admission and $8 for birthday parties or scout troops. Tickets are available in advance through the CCBC Box Office at 443-840-ARTS (2787) and at the door, space permitting.

In celebration of The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey's 50th Anniversary Season, the Theatre will offer a limited number of specially-priced seats to several performances of Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist for $19.63, in honor of the year the company was founded in Cape May, New Jersey.
