Upcoming Theatre Communication Group Member Shows - 12/05 for Hartford

It's hard to find fault with Leslie Uggams. The immensely talented lady can act and sing up a storm. She didn't soar as Lena Horne in Stormy Weather for naught. Now in Uptown Downtown, her own musical journey, she excels once more, this time in the comfort of her own shoes.

The David Berger Jazz Orchestra - the acclaimed band featured in the Wall Street Journal, National Public Radio and PBS TV - recently released their latest CD, 'Sing Me A Love Song: Harry Warren's Undiscovered Standards', featuring Freda Payne ('Band Of Gold,' 'Bring The Boys Home') and Denzal Sinclaire (National Jazz Award Winner). The 4th Annual Wells Fargo Theatrical Diversity Project will be held on Friday, November 19, 2010 at Pasadena Playhouse (39 S. El Molino Avenue).

Actress/singer par excellence Leslie Uggams brings her acclaimed one-woman show Uptown Downtown to the Pasadena Playhouse opening November 19. In stories and song, Uggams recreates her extraordinary journey from uptown to downtown. From Mitch Miller to Roots. From the Apollo Theater to Broadway. Featuring direction by Stormy Weather's (2009) Michael Bush and musical direction by Don Rebic, the show played earlier this year at New York City's Jazz at Lincoln Center.

The 4th Annual Wells Fargo Theatrical Diversity Project will be held on Friday, November 19, 2010 at Pasadena Playhouse (39 S. El Molino Avenue).

Musical Theatre West has announced that Andrea McArdle, Broadway's original Annie, will star as Miss Hannigan in its upcoming production of ANNIE at the beautiful 1070-seat Carpenter Performing Arts Center in Long Beach. ANNIE previews October 29th and runs October 30th through November 14th. Musical Theatre West Artistic Director/Producer Steven Glaudini directs with musical direction by Daniel Thomas and choreography by Roger Castellano.

Freda Payne returns to the Iridium Nov 12-14 doing her tribute Ella and now Lena. Born in Detroit, Michigan, Freda grew up listening to Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, which inspired her growing interest in music. While still in school, she began her musical career by singing radio commercial jingles. It was then that her polished voice first caught the attention of music executives and other artists. She was wooed with offers of contracts from the likes of Berry Gordy and Duke Ellington, but her mother wanted her to finish school first. After she did, the legendary Pearl Bailey gave Freda her first professional job and this paved the way for her to share the stage with other legends such as Lionel Hampton, Sammy Davis Jr., Billy Eckstine, Quincy ]ones, Bill Cosby and many others. Freda toured with Quincy Jones during his big band era, performing at the world famous Apollo in New York and the Regal in Chicago, among others, and soon after, recorded her first album When The Lights Go Down for Impulse Records.

The Reagle Music Theatre of Greater Boston presents Tony and Emmy Award winner Leslie Uggams in concert for two shows only October 16 and 17 at 2 p.m.

In a a recent article in the LA Times, Mark Boehm discussed the re-opening of Pasadena Playhouse, in addition to its latest production, FDR, starring Ed Asner. Boehm says, 'Sheldon Epps, the Pasadena Playhouse's artistic director, is touting the 'very sexy story' that's unfolding as his theater returns Tuesday night with its first show since it closed Feb. 7, then reopened in U.S. Bankruptcy Court.'
