Today, Jimmy Fallon, who recently took over hosting duties of NBC's TONIGHT SHOW from Jay Leno, turned to Twitter to welcome Colbert to his new late show time slot

Speaking on the news of his upcoming new gig on CBS, Colbert commented "I'm thrilled and grateful that CBS chose me. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go grind a gap in my front teeth."

Deadline has also confirmed Letterman's retirement, reporting that the late night host began informing his coworks, and CBS chairman, Les Moonves, this morning.

The original contract was extended from last Thursday, July 25, until today at 5 p.m. EST. Negotiations continued this morning, though no agreement was reached.
