Music Director Leon Botstein opens the ASO's 53rd season by shining a light on one of the most fascinating partnerships in classical music: the marriage of Richard and Pauline Strauss. Despite the failure of Pauline's own musical career and the famously sharp-tongued barbs she often directed at Strauss himself, the marriage endured and Strauss frequently used their relationship as inspiration for his music. The works on this concert bring together rarely-heard music from Intermezzo, the opera Strauss wrote when Pauline accused him of adultery; the NY debut of Mark Bebbington in Parergon, a piano concerto portraying the illness of the couple's son; and Symphonia Domestica, representing 24 hours in the life of the Strauss family at home.
If shifting psychodynamics are your thing, this version caters to your taste. Tkel is excellent as she repeatedly changes voice and accent and affect, a Noo Yoouhk-accented noodginess and klutziness as Vanda, a Judy-Holliday-in-Born-Yesterday sprightliness as a slightly more empowered Vanda making suggestions during the reading, and a cultivated Masterpiece Theatre voice and regally bitchy style as Wanda and as maybe-Venus.

"I really, really miss high school theatre."
This was the first thought I had as I entered, sat and watched, and exited McCallum Fine Arts Academy' production of The Producers. Because I first-handedly know how much work- and how much fun- it is to spend countless hours rehearsing (need to interject that these dedicated students spent their summer rehearsing for this show), running the show countless times, and making several costume and set changes, showstopping numbers, and putting on a beloved Broadway musical on their high school stage look easy. And MacTheatre pulled it off.
