The New York Philharmonic will present its 11th season of Summertime Classics, July 2-6, 2014, featuring five themed concerts with Bramwell Tovey, who has been the host and conductor of the series since its founding in 2004. On the first program, July 2-3, 2014, titled 'Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, and Friends,' the New York Philharmonic will perform Shostakovich's Festive Overture; Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 1, with pianist Joyce Yang as soloist; Musorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain; Rachmaninoff's arrangement of his own Vocalise; and Tchaikovsky's Waltz of the Flowers from The Nutcracker, and Marche slave. The second program, July 4-6, 2014, titled 'Star-Spangled Celebration,' will feature the New York Philharmonic and United States Marine Drum & Bugle Corps - 'The Commandant's Own,' which is celebrating its 80th-anniversary year - in a program that includes Copland's Clarinet Concerto, with Associate Principal Clarinet Mark Nuccio as soloist, and Fanfare for the Common Man; Gershwin's 'Strike Up the Band' from Strike Up the Band; Sousa marches; and more. In these performances Major Brian Dix, director and commanding officer of 'The Commandant's Own,' will share conducting duties with Bramwell Tovey.

The love that dare not speak its name becomes exactly that in Bill McMahon's heart-tugging work Cover, a play which examines the fault lines found in even the most committed relationships. Produced by Tony Award-winning producer Jim Kierstead and directed by Paul J. Michael, Cover will be performed Tuesday, July 15 at 6pm, Thursday, July 17 at 7:45pm, Saturday, July 26 at 4:15pm, Sunday, July 27 at 7pm, Monday, July 28 at 7:30pm and Tuesday, July 29 at 6pm at the Dorothy Strelsin Theatre, located at 312 West 36th Street.

It's often been observed of Shakespeare that his plays don't tell you what he thinks about most subjects. But it is hard to doubt that he believed in romantic love, that mad, intoxicating, all-encompassing feeling that inspires courtship and marriage. Many of his comedies are essentially love delivery vehicles, giddy confections that give the audience an extraordinarily broad license just to roll in the bliss of it. I think especially of Twelfth Night, Much Ado About Nothing, and A Midsummer Night's Dream. But the most love-mad of all is surely As You Like It. And thankfully, that love-mad champagne feeling is served up nearly full-force in the Chesapeake Shakespeare Company's latest rendering of the play.

Bucks County Playhouse has announced their Founders Day Diamond Jubilee, a festive community gathering on Monday evening, June 30, 2014 at 7 pm to commemorate the first 75 years of the Playhouse. The evening will begin with the debut of a new film: Straw Hat Cinderella: Bucks County Playhouse at 75. Narrated by stage and screen star Marsha Mason, the film features historic photographs, paintings and drawings and commentary by curator David Leopold, Playhouse producer Alexander Fraser, Michener Director and CEO Lisa Hanover, and painter Robert Beck. World War One is often, and rightly, seen as the schism that shattered the old world order - the class systems, international balances of power, the domestic balance between men and women. What is less discussed, however, is the way that many of these seismic changes were expressed by and affected music. Composers found their whole world-view, the core of what drove them to write, shattered and reshaped. And their audiences found new resonances in their music. Because music at that time wasn't just music - it was a way of making sense of a chaotic world. A century on, Leon Botstein and the American Symphony Orchestra present a fascinating, powerful look at that period in 'Forged From Fire' at Carnegie Hall tonight, May 30 at 8pm.
