The producers of the hit musical have also announced complete casting for the relaunch of the North American Tour. Talia Suskauer (Elphaba), Allison Bailey (Glinda), Sharon Sachs (Madame Morrible) and Tony Award and Drama Desk Award winner Cleavant Derricks (The Wizard) will return to their roles.
The founder of modern Sadism, Marquis de Sade's works are known for their controversy and sexual violence. More palatable is one of the few surviving plays, written by de Sade during one of his many stints in prison in the late 1700s. OXTIERN is undoubtedly a commentary on the French aristocracy that judged him so harshly.
FRANKENSTEIN is presented in black and white by 3rd Act Theatre Company. This truly tragic tale of monsters and the darkness that resides within us all is beautifully adapted by Victor Hannam and directed by Dakota Lee Bryant. 3rd Act presents this play at Northpark Mall, the first in their Noire series in their second season, POWER.
Improv and alcohol flow in this Drunk Classics tour. A Midsummer Night's Drink combines all the wildly unpredictable elements of improv, complete with a drunk actor and two 'royalty' audience members for this fun, outlandish night of Shakespeare.
A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DRINK based off of William Shakespeare's A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM is adapted by Dakota Lee Bryant and directed by Nicholas Toscani.
3rd Act Theatre Company closes out their inaugural season with MOONGLOW. The story of two Alzheimer's patients who find each other as they're losing their memories is beautiful and gives a true-to-life account of the cruel effects of Alzheimer's and Dementia.
3rd Act Theatre Company announced their second season, themed POWER, and shows to be performed, via a livestream event on Facebook last Saturday. Mainstage shows are: Running Mates by Beth Kandor, Setting the Nation Right and Other Easy Plays for Women, by Bell Elliot Palmer, and Heartbreak House by George Bernard Shaw.
When done well, The Importance of Being Earnest is delightfully fun, fast, and funny. Oklahoma City's 3rd Act Theatre Company has created a production that is all of that and more.
The Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Gustav Dudamel, played magnificently July 16, 2019 as they first featured award-winning Pablo Ferrandez in Antonin Dvorak's Cello Concerto in B minor, Opus 104 in a most passionate and stirring performance. The piece was written by Dvorak about his sister-in-law, who never acknowledged her affection for him, giving this piece an extraordinary range of emotions that Ferrandez fervently played, seeming to feel every note and every nuance with his body and his soul. He is an extraordinary musician, and fully captivated the audience; so much so there were numerous encores of appreciation. It was a moving, heart-felt performance, and I would go anywhere to hear and watch him play again, play anything, as this performance was exalting.
Part two of the evening was a reprise, or rather reworking of the performance L. A. Dance Project originally performed at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, which I reviewed, in 2018. (https://www.broadwayworld.com/los-angeles/article/BWW-Review-ROMEO-JULIET-at-Walt-Disney-Concert-Hall-20181106)
Hard to compare any other performance to this one. "Revisited," meaning reverse role changes that were made in the casting of this, putting another dimension into significance from the original version, plus updated costuming and scenics, and "Rejoiced," because it was performed, live, in front of your eyes and ears, by The L Philharmonic and The L A Dance Project, at The Walt Disney Concert Hall in Downtown Los Angeles, California.
There is much to enjoy in Coyote Stageworks' production of THE COCKTAIL HOUR, by A.R. Gurney: the script is funny, the directing is top-notch, and there is a great deal of excellent acting. Unfortunately, one actor was sick at the performance I attended, resulting in problems for the show that night.
Coyote StageWorks, the Coachella Valley- based award-winning Actors' Equity professional theater company will conclude its 2018 theatrical season with a production of "The Cocktail Hour," a straight-up comedy about a family on the rocks. The play will star Lee Bryant, Jeffrey Jones, Chuck Yates, and Yo Younger, and will be directed by David Youse. "The Cocktail Hour" is a witty and perceptive play by A.R. Gurney that tells the story of a playwright who returns to his family home in 1970's upstate New York, bringing with him a new play, which he has written about his family. He wants to obtain their permission to proceed with production, but his very proper and wealthy parents are cautious and his sister is upset about how minor her role is in the play.
Barbara Maier Gustern will produce a cabaret benefit June 27th at 7PM at Pangea in New York City in memory of her husband, singer-actor Joe Gustern, who passed away April 17, 2017.
The works of William Shakespeare can be some of the most challenging plays for any company to produce. One of the potential hurdles is whether or not to change or alter the play to make it 'more accessible' to modern audiences. Some will argue that no such changes need to ever happen because the plays are as accessible and relatable today as they have always been. Others say modern audiences need help to grasp the play's language and its meaning. Oklahoma Shakespeare in the Park is taking on these challenges in their rollicking and entertaining production of Taming of the Shrew, now playing on the stage at the Myriad Botanical Gardens.
