Facebook, Scrabulous, handheld solitaire games, the Greek Isles, Greek myths... what do all of these things have in common? They all figure prominently in New Jewish Theatre's upcoming production of SIRENS by Deborah Zoe Laufer, where a 25th Anniversary trip to the Greek Isles becomes a catalyst for an amusing series of events in this quirky romantic comedy. The biggest hit from last year's Humana Festival of New American Plays, Laufer's play is a quirky empty-nest romantic comedy about a husband and wife and the hit love song he wrote for her more than 25 years ago.

Playwright Deborah Zoe Laufer has constructed an interesting and very engaging work with SIRENS, which comes to us directly from the Humana New Plays Festival. This is a whimsical and charming tale that touches on a couple of different mythologies with its references to muses and sirens, one of which actually makes an appearance here. The New Jewish Theatre has put together a warm and humorous production that benefits greatly from excellent casting and sharp direction.

The was my first time seeing BIG RIVER, and I must confess to some misgivings I harbored concerning William Hauptman's adaptation of Mark Twain's classic tale, 'The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.' The original is a work of great American literature, filled with dialogue that's now considered controversial, but which was pitch perfect and true to its characters and its time. Happily, Hauptman and composer/lyricist Roger Miller have crafted a wonderful version that manages to capture the flavor and feel of the times, while remaining fairly faithful to its source material. Stage St. Louis has put together a production that's a feast for the eyes and ears, conjuring up the muddy Mississippi on stage with considerable technical wizardry, while a talented cast works its own magic under Michael Hamilton's expert direction.
Avalon Theatre Company is proud to present its first holiday production, AN O.HENRY CHRISTMAS, A Christmas Musical by Peter Ekstrom, December 3 - 20 at Avalon in ArtSpace at Crestwood Court. AN O.HENRY CHRISTMAS is comprised of two heart-warming one-act musicals based on the classic O. Henry stories, The Gift of the Magi and The Last Leaf.
Though only one of the stories that's adapted for AN O.HENRY CHRISTMAS, 'The Gift of the Magi', is truly Christmas-themed, this musical adaptation of writer William Sidney Porter, who's certainly more recognizable under his pen name, O. Henry, delivers enough positive messages about faith, hope and love to make it perfectly suited for the holiday season. Avalon Theatre Company is offering up a solid presentation of this work that's greatly enhanced by sensitive direction and a strong cast.
