Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo will present the Charles Sullivan Award for Distinguished Service in the Arts to local business woman and philanthropist Elizabeth Z. Chace. Emmy Award winning actor Richard Jenkins and Sharon Jenkins, 2013 Pell Award Lifetime Achievement recipients, will present the Pell Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts to The Public Theater's Artistic Director Oskar Eustis and Laurie Eustis.
The new American play Eclipsed by Danai Gurira, starring Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong'o, officially opened last night, March 6th, 2016 on Broadway at the Golden Theatre (252 W. 45th Street). The play also stars Pascale Armand, Akosua Busia, Zainab Jah and Saycon Sengbloh and is directed by Liesl Tommy. ?At the 20th annual Pell Awards, Trinity Repertory Company will honor local artists Len Cabral and Charlene Carpenzano with Rhode Island Pell Awards for Excellence in the Arts alongside previously announced honorees The Public Theater artistic director Oskar Eustis, Laurie Eustis and Elizabeth Chace. This past week The Public Theater celerbrated their 2015 Summer Gala. The gala featured a special performance of the free Shakespeare in the Park production of THE TEMPEST, featuring a cast that includes Sam Waterston and Jesse Tyler Ferguson and directed by Michael Greif. The summer gala also honored Bernard Spitzer (1924-2014) and Anna Spitzer for their extraordinary support over several years.

The Public Theater announced today that The Public Theater's Annual Gala will take place on Tuesday, June 9 at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. The evening will include a special performance of the free Shakespeare in the Park production of THE TEMPEST, featuring a cast that includes Sam Waterston and Jesse Tyler Ferguson and directed by Michael Greif, as well as an alfresco dinner in Central Park followed by a dessert reception. Pat Fili-Krushel and Audrey Wilf will serve as Gala Co-Chairs for this popular summer event.
Lapham's Quarterly (Editor and Publisher Lewis Lapham) announced today their annual gala, the DECADES BALL: The 1950s, was held last night, June 3 at Capitale (130 Bowery at Grand Street). The evening, emceed by Public Theater Artistic Director Oskar Eustis, included performances and readings by Tom Hanks and Patricia Clarkson, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Martha Plimpton, Tony Kushner, Ari Graynor, Steven Pasquale, Francois Battiste, Paul Muldoon, Nellie McKay, and a toast by Editor and Publisher of Lapham's Quarterly, Lewis Lapham. Kevin Philips received the 2013 Janus Prize, presented by benefit co-chair Morley Safer.

The Public Theater began previews for the world premiere of DETROIT '67, a Public Lab production by Dominique Morisseau, on Tuesday, February 26. Directed by Kwame Kwei-Armah, DETROIT '67 will run through Sunday, March 17 and opened last night in The Public's Shiva Theater. Additionally, the English language premiere of NEVA, written and directed by Guillermo Calderon, opened last night.

The stars came out on Thursday as The Public Theater celebrated the completion of the $40 million revitalization of its downtown home at Astor Place with a special rededication ceremony. The event featured the "throwing out of the first lines" of Shakespeare by city officials and artists with ties to The Public, followed by a special performance from the cast of Hair, which had its world premiere at The Public when it opened in 1967.
Earlier today, the Public Theater celebrated the completion of the $40 million revitalization of its downtown home at Astor Place with a special rededication ceremony. The event featured the "throwing out of the first lines" of Shakespeare by city officials and artists with ties to The Public, followed by a special performance from the cast of Hair, which had its world premiere at The Public when it opened in 1967. A physical expression of the Company's core mission of sparking dialogues, fostering artistic development and experimentation and increasing public accessibility, the revitalization project opened up the landmark building to the street and community, and transformed the lobby into a public piazza for artists, students and audiences.
