Playwright Larry Kramer published a list of his 10 Favorite Books on the New York Times earlier this week, being the next in editor Aaron Hicklin's series for his website One Grand Books. But the play is not all philosophical argument, as important as this is: it also is a love story, a family tale, and an account of the 'band of brothers' that was Gay Men's Health Crisis. And like most great playwrights who turn their attention to public events, Kramer maintains a tight relationship between these stories. Kramer's artistic control of the huge canvas on which he paints is in the end what makes the play so powerful.
The Eugene O'Neill Theater Center has announced that award-winning stage and film director, playwright, and actor George C. Wolfe will receive the 16th Monte Cristo Award.
'The Normal Heart' by Larry Kramer is not a light-hearted piece of theatre. It is a heavy drama about the terrifying 'new cancer' that ravaged the gay community in the early 1980s. It is dark and frustrating, and beautiful, and the script demands a lot of a cast. It seems that Vintage Theatre Company was up to that challenge and more.
