Manila, Philippines--Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) and The Necessary Theater present the Tony Award-winning play THE NORMAL HEART at the PETA Theater Center (No. 5 Eymard Drive, New Manila, Quezon City) this weekend. Catch the last two performances on Sunday, 3 p.m. and 8 p.m.

The play revisits the issues of acceptance, equality, and survival among gay men having the symptoms of HIV/AIDS in 1980's New York, during a time of social ignorance and apathy.

Taking place between 1981 and 1984, THE NORMAL HEART tells the incredible true story of the early days of the AIDS epidemic. Ned Weeks, the playwright Larry Kramer's autobiographical protagonist, is labeled radical, extreme, prudish and self-hating by both friends and enemies alike. But when a mysterious virus, then coined "gay cancer," begins rapidly taking the lives of young men, this opinionated, unyielding and impassioned gay activist finds himself racing the clock for funding, research, and recognition. The play premiered at the Public Theater (Off-Broadway) in New York in 1985 and had since enjoyed several reruns, revivals and recently a television film version produced by HBO Films (2014).

THE NORMAL HEART stars Bart Guingona (Ned Weeks), Richard Cunanan (Ben Weeks), Topper Fabregas (Felix Turner), TJ Trinidad (Bruce Niles), Roselyn Perez (Dr. Emma Brookner), Red Concepcion (Tommy Boatwright), Nor Domingo (Mickey Marcus), and Jef Flores (Craig, Grady).

This production of THE NORMAL HEART, which premiered in Makati City last year, received 10 nominations and took home four wins at the 8th Gawad Buhay Awards, which include Outstanding Ensemble Performance for a Play, Outstanding Production of an Existing Material, Outstanding Featured Female Performance (Roselyn Perez), and Outstanding Stage Direction (Bart Guingona).
