San Francisco's African-American Shakespeare Company proudly announces the lineup for its 16th season. The season marks African-American Shakespeare Company's first season under the new artistic leadership of acclaimed actor and director L. Peter Callender. The season opens in September with IPH..., Colin Teevan's stunning adaptation of Euripides' classic Greek tragedy; Dylan Russell directs this co-production with Brava Theater. The company continues its season in December with an enchanting holiday production of CINDERELLA; this new take on the timeless fairytale has become a seasonal favorite for families and children of all ages. Closing the season in April is Shakespeare's TWELFTH NIGHT, directed by L. Peter Callender and featuring an original score by renowned local jazz composer Marcus Shelby. Productions will be staged at Brava Theater and at the African American Art & Culture Complex, both located in San Francisco. TheatreFIRST continues its active pursuit of a permanent Downtown Oakland location, a space that will serve as home for TheatreFIRST and for other Oakland-based arts organizations. Each day we grow closer to this goal. TheatreFIRST looks forward producing to a full season of 3 shows beginning Fall 2009 to Summer 2010.

Marin Theatre Company extends MY CHILDREN! MY AFRICA!, Now through February 15 By Athol Fugard | Directed by Josh Costello Starring L. Peter Callender, Laura Morache, and Lloyd Roberson II MILL VALLEY, CA- Due to high ticket demand, Marin Theatre Company has extended its hit production of My Children! My Africa! by renowned South African playwright Athol Fugard. The show extends an extra week with eight additional performances through February 15, 2008. 'Hope is alive. . . in the afterglow of President Obama's inauguration, the drama's fatal conflict in a battle of entrenched racism packed an enormous punch,' says Robert Hurwitt of the San Francisco Chronicle. And from Jerry Friedman of KGO, 'I was extremely impressed with the dynamic ensemble cast . . . Fugard's writing is magnificent and it's all complemented with a great set, lighting and sound, and brilliantly directed . . . This is a powerful, must-see production.' Set in 1985 South Africa, during a period of intense and often violent anti-Apartheid protests and boycotts, My Children! My Africa! follows the friendship of two teenagers. Thami, a gifted and independent black student, and Isabel, a white prep school student, participate in a rare interracial debate at Thami's school. Against the backdrop of an education system in crisis, Fugard's hopeful, seasoned teacher Mr. M struggles to lift his students above the strife and violence that is boiling in their black township. My Children! My Africa! premiered at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1989 and has been performed since then worldwide.
