2014 Origin's First Irish Festival Begins with BOYS AND GIRLS & WAITING FOR GODOT Today

Dylan Coburn Gray's 'Boys and Girls' and the groundbreaking production of Samuel Beckett's 'Waiting for Godot' in Yiddish -- open the 7th annual Origin's 1st Irish Festival today and tomorrow, September 3 and 4. In all four US premieres and seven world premieres will be seen in the month-long festival running through September 28.

the cell, A Twenty-First Century Salon, along with the 1st Irish Theatre Festival, A Celebration of the Best of Irish Theatre presented by Origin Theatre Company, presents THE MCGOWAN TRILOGY, a series of one-act plays by award-winning writer Seamus Scanlon. Directed by Kira Simring, Artistic Director of the cell, THE MCGOWAN TRILOGY will play a strictly-limited engagement from September 11th - October 5th at the cell (338 West 23rd Street). The press opening is Saturday, September 13, 2014.

'An American Family Takes a Lover' by Amina Henry is a dark, dark comedy that peeks into the household comprised of an upscale American couple, Richard David and Lady Anne, and their 'other person,' a young Black woman named Justine who is their slave. The arrival of a handyman to fix a hole in the wall sets off a series of developments that tear this cockeyed family apart in an absurd parable that explores The Stockholm Syndrome through a sexual and racial lens. Theater for the New City, 155 First Ave., will present The Cell Theatre Company's production of the play November 7 to 17. It's a premiere run, directed by Kira Simring, Artistic Director of The Cell Theatre Company (founding Artistic Director Nancy Manocherian), where the piece was originally incubated.

The musical "McGoldricks' Thread" sowed up three major awards at the closing ceremonies last night of the sixth Origin's 1st Irish Theatre Festival, held at Papillon Bistro & Bar, 22 East 54th Street. The crowd-pleasing show, brimming with Irish step dancing performed by a youth-dominated cast, won for Best Production, and Best Direction for Kira Simring. The production also was honored with the Festival's Special Jury Prize.

ORIGIN'S 1ST IRISH 2013 Announces Nominees for Awards Monday

Nominations for the top awards of Origin's 1st Irish 2013 are being announced today for an Awards Ceremony hosted by Papillon Bistro & Bar, 22 East 54th Street on Monday September 30 at 7pm. In all eight plays were seen in competition during the month-long festival which began on September 2. The sixth annual edition of 1st Irish, the first and only festival in the world dedicated to Irish playwrights, welcomed two productions from Ireland, and six from the U.S. by contemporary Irish playwrights from Belfast, Dublin, Boston and New York. A total of six were world premieres.

MCGOLDRICK'S THREAD will play a two-week Off-Broadway limited engagement, as part of the 1st Irish Theater Festival, at St. Marks Theatre 80 (80 St. Marks Pl, NYC). Barrie's 'Peter Pan and Wendy' and 'The Little White Bird' and scored by the indie band, The Books. PETER/WENDY has been playing a limited engagement at the cell (338 W. 23rd St NYC). Performances began Thursday, May 30 and will now continue through Saturday, June 29.
