HBO Max solidifies its commitment to kids' and family programming announcing today an expansive partnership with Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit media and educational organization, to bring four new series and five new seasons of Sesame Street, annual specials, as well as its historic 50-year library, to HBO Max, scheduled to launch in spring of 2020. Beginning with season 51, Sesame Street will premiere on HBO Max and then continue to air for free on PBS KIDS. Newly commissioned HBO Max content will also be made available to PBS KIDS after premiering on HBO Max. HBO will continue to air Sesame Street through season 50.
The senior executives tapped to lead original kids and family content for HBO Max were announced today by Jennifer O'Connell, Executive Vice President, Original Non-Fiction and Kids, HBO Max. Joining the kids and family team are Billy Wee, Senior Vice President, Original Animation, and Nikki Reed, Vice President, Kids and Family Scripted Originals, both reporting to O'Connell. Kevin Reilly, President, TBS, TNT, and truTV, and Chief Content Officer, HBO Max today announced that Brett Weitz, general manager of TBS & TNT will now also take on oversight of truTV, reporting to him. Weitz will manage all three networks and oversee the creative executive teams and development for all three networks in New York and Los Angeles. HBO Max is ordering two reimagined seasons, with 24 episodes of the beloved animated series The Boondocks. The series from creator Aaron McGruder will launch in Fall 2020 with a 50-minute special. All 55 episodes of the original The Boondocks series will also be available on the direct-to-consumer offering at launch.
