Review: COCONUT CAKE at The Ensemble Theatre

Written by playwright Melda Beaty and directed by The Ensemble Theatre’s Artistic Director Eileen J. Morris, this slice-of-life play shines a spotlight on the narrative of five older men, figures who are often background characters in the stories we tell.

Review: BLACKBIRD at Dirt Dogs Theatre Co.

This is a wonderfully produced version of an unflinching script, which may be the hardest part of BLACKBIRD. It feels so real that the fear factor of an abuser and a victim seething at each other or, worse, being tender to them feels too real sometimes.

Review: MISERY Hobbles Along at Dirt Dogs

That Dirt Dogs would choose MISERY for their “season of love” makes perfect sense. As a company they have made a name for themselves by creating plays fueled by testosterone laden energy and provocative rough language. There is an intensity and violence that suggests MISERY would be a perfect project for them, and indeed this production proves that assumption mostly correct.

BWW Review: A STEADY RAIN Dazzles from Dirt Dogs Theatre Co.

It’s a chance to sit in an intimate space with artists who excel at telling a story you will never see in a large opera house or performance hall. A STEADY RAIN is tough, profane, and full of over-the-top masculinity, and yet it feels as progressive as it can be. It asks tough questions, and it makes you uncomfortable with its answers.

BWW Reviews: Matthew C. Logan's Production of EQUUS is Intense and Beautifully Poignant

Director Matthew C. Logan and his stellar cast delve into English playwright Peter Shaffer's pyschodramatic play about a disturbed youth's fanatical obsession with horses. Written in 1973 and inspired by true events, EQUUS is certainly challenging material concerning the heavy themes of religion, sexuality, passion and normalism in society. The ensemble faces the material with unflinching conviction.
