A comic tale of unlikely love and blood unfolded on the stage of New York's Signature Theatre, Monday, July 29, when the New York Musical Festival presented ALIVE! The ZOMBIE Musical. The one night only concert, featuring zombies, singing fairies, dancing oracles and magic portals, was held at The Alice Griffin Jewel Box Theatre at The Pershing Square Signature Center.

When bookwriter Chris D'Arienzo's 1980s hair-band tuner Rock of Ages moved from Off-Broadway's New World Stages to the Brooks Atkinson Theatre in April of 2009 - with a score made up of rock classics by Journey, Styx, Asia, Twisted Sister, Bon Jovi, Foreigner and a bunch of others - it was, to this reviewer's recollection, the first Broadway jukebox musical to acknowledge the silliness of jamming hit songs into an unrelated story.

ROCK OF AGES will host special 'Yankees Night' at New World Stages on Wednesday, July 31 at 8PM, to benefit the Carlos Beltran Foundation. Cast, band members and fans of hit musical Come From Away in London celebrated Canada Day today, 1 July, by performing at Tottenham Court Road Station and sharing random acts of kindness with 500 passing commuters by handing out £5 travelcards. With this show of goodwill they hoped to honour the spirit of the musical and the residents of Newfoundland, Canada who welcomed stranded air passengers from around the world in the wake of 911.

The roar of the audience's appreciation at the curtain call still rings loudly in my ear. Although I alternated between laughing and crying while watching the national tour of COME FROM AWAY at the Adrienne Arsht Center, what I remember feeling once the curtain came down was joy. I may have discovered for myself why this show is such a hit on Broadway and on tour because while it talks about a challenging time in our history, it also reminds us of how kind people were in the aftermath of 911. (Something that feels lacking in our current political climate.) It is easy to be kind to those you love, but the unquestionable kindness people can have for strangers - inspires. COME FROM AWAY is a story we need to keep telling. It's a story we should continue to tell to remind us that people can and should genuinely care for one another even and especially when they have nothing to gain. 

'On the northeast tip of North America, on an island called Newfoundland, there's an airport. It used to be one of the biggest airports in the world. And next to it is a town, called Gander.' These first lines of dialogue set the tone for a musical about community and acceptance in the face of adversity. That musical, Come From Away, just opened in Miami at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts as a leg of its first North American tour.
