It's one of my favorite weekends of the year. The weekend I get to spend three days listening to exciting new works as presented by some of the best performers Seattle has to offer. And this year Village Theatre did not disappoint as they invited members, performers, staff and press to partake of their Village Originals 13th Annual Festival of New Musicals. Some good, some maybe not so, some needing a little more work than others but all showing a deep love for the art and presented by some of the best voices in town. Now, I can't review them as they're still works in progress but I can tell you about the shows presented over the weekend and let you know about the one show that while still in development is still running one more weekend and can have tickets purchased to by non-members (that would be you, Dear Readers).

Balagan Theatre recently announced that a trio of Broadway powerhouse artists will star in 'Carrie: The Musical' this fall: Alice Ripley, Kendra Kassebaum, and Keaton Whittaker as Carrie. Ripley is best known for her Tony Award-winning turn as Diana Goodman in 'Next to Normal'; Kassebaum originated the role of Glinda in 'Wicked' on the first national tour; and young local actor Keaton Whittaker starred alongside Angela Lansbury and Catherine Zeta-Jones in 'A Little Night Music'. Balagan also announced a trio of Broadway powerhouse artists for Carrie: The Musical: Alice Ripley, Kendra Kassebaum, and Keaton Whittaker as Carrie. Ripley is best known for her Tony Award-winning turn as Diana Goodman in Next to Normal; Kassebaum was the first to replace Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda in Wicked; and young local actor Keaton Whittaker starred alongside Angela Lansbury and Catherine Zeta-Jones in A Little Night Music.

The highly anticipated local production of the hit Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey show "Next To Normal" has finally opened at Capitol Hill's Balagan Theatre. And while still an incredibly evocative and powerful show, the current production, while technically superb, didn't quite manage that same hard hitting spark.

Washington state teens are working on an all-state all-student production of this Golden Age staple as part of a brand new education program called The Oklahoma! Project.
