With the topic of health care on the minds of millions of Americans around the country, CASA 0101 Theater, 2102 East First Street (at St. Louis Street), Boyle Heights, CA 90033 will kick off the new year (January 31 - February 23, 2014) with a World Premiere play written by award-winning playwright and screenwriter, Josefina Lopez entitled A CAT NAMED MERCY, a dark comedy about Catalina Rodriguez, a Latina Licensed Vocational Nurse working at Elysian Estates Nursing Home who gets her hours cut, becomes uninsured and is in desperate need of an emergency operation. With the help of a cat she names Mercy, she is divinely guided to do the unthinkable to save her life.
What do you get when you take a group of actors, 6 weeks of skate school, and a beautiful outdoor theatre? You get the regional premiere of Tuacahn's 'Starlight Express'. This past Thursday was the last time my quadruple threat cast (they can now add skating to their acting, singing, and dancing skill set) performed this high-octane show that has been thrilling audiences throughout Southern Utah all season long. For those that don't know the show it is the most unique experience on stage that you can have next to Cirque du Soleil. The concept is simple; through the mind of one young boy we get a glimpse into his imagination as he puts his trains to the test race after race. We have the good guys (Rusty & Poppa), the bad boys (Greaseball & Electra), and the girls who pine for them (Pearl & Dinah). All of this while skating on and off the stage as well as throughout the audience (the skate track actually weaved through the seats of Tuacahn) as they try to be the fastest train on the track.

The Theater Company (TTC) can't stand the 'antici...pation' anymore! Richard O'Brien's THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW opens next week! This is TTC's second time producing this Sci-fi cult hit. Due to popular demand, it is being staged again after several years of their patrons begging for a revival. But don't expect the same production as last time, 'Rocky can be done in many different ways,' notes Producing Artistic Director David Zimmerman, 'and we are bringing a fresh design and look to the show instead of copying the movie or our past production. Director Billy Mitchell has shown in the past that he can relate to an audience and create something different and interesting all at the same time, so I am confident we will not only repeat our success, but sell out this production!'
