The Bushwick Starr is proud to announce our 2016-17 Season of Programming. The Season begins with our developing work program, the Propeller Project, which this year introduces a new piece by eclectic performance artist, Shasta Geaux Pop, aka Ayesha Jordan (Enter & Exit, Living Room Dance Breaks). Our Main Stage shows feature an ambitious and exciting line-up of world premiers from: award-winning theater ensemble The Mad Ones (The Essential Straight & Narrow, The Tremendous Tremendous), celebrated downtown duo Kate Benson and Lee Sunday Evans (A Beautiful Day in November on the Banks of the Greatest of the Great Lakes), rising star playwright Phillip Howze(abominable, Tiny Boyfriend), and multi-media cult favorites Royal Osiris Karaoke Ensemble(Everything One in the Disc of the Sun). Our ongoing community events and festivals, Puppet Kitchen, Brooklyn Gypsies, and Big Green Theater, will continue to present new collaborative work geared towards our Bushwick neighborhood audience, including a multi-lingual partnership between playwright William Burke (Comfort Dogs, the food was terrible) and Modesto Flako Jimenez(Brooklyn Gypsies). And finally, our free Starr Reading Series will cultivate new plays in development from some of NYC's most exciting young playwrights.

In its 25-year history, New Georges has brought forth an unprecedented generation of women playwrights and directors, providing them with steady artistic support and first or career-transforming productions in New York City. New Georges will celebrate its anniversary season with the World Premiere of Hilary Bettis' Alligator, directed by Elena Araoz, presented in collaboration with The Sol Project this fall, and of Sheila Callaghan and Daniella Topol's collaboratively-created Water at 3LD Art & Technology Center in June of 2017 as part of Water City, a multi-disciplinary art event.

The West Coast premiere of a theatrical reimagining of the history of the Weather Underground, HOME/SICK was developed and devised by New York City theater collective The Assembly and members of the cast to take a look at the changing political scene from 1969 through 1973 when a group of outcasts disgusted by the Vietnam War and the government's repression of those seeking equality domestically took a stand to affect political change by seizing control of Students for a Democratic Society and reshaping it in the name of overthrowing the United States government. Believing violence to be the only means to transform American politics and society, these passionate idealists accelerated the movement to a revolutionary fervor, but let their internal fears and confusion somehow get in their way.

Mike Iveson Sci-Fi World Premiere to Play The Kitchen in May

The Kitchen is pleased to present The Tear Drinkers, the second musical work from beloved performer and Bessie-Award-winning composer Mike Iveson. The Tear Drinkers is a suite of sci-fi songs for six performers and piano; it follows four humans who have been abducted by the United States government and brought to an underground holding tank in New Mexico, so that the government can determine which of them is actually an alien from another planet masquerading as an earthling. Downtown performer Mike Iveson leads a team of exceptional artists, including pioneering video artist Charles Atlas, in a look at the private heartaches and private bathroom rituals of humans and aliens alike.
