BWW Review: HOME/SICK Recounts the Radical Politics of the Weather Underground

The West Coast premiere of a theatrical reimagining of the history of the Weather Underground, HOME/SICK was developed and devised by New York City theater collective The Assembly and members of the cast to take a look at the changing political scene from 1969 through 1973 when a group of outcasts disgusted by the Vietnam War and the government's repression of those seeking equality domestically took a stand to affect political change by seizing control of Students for a Democratic Society and reshaping it in the name of overthrowing the United States government. Believing violence to be the only means to transform American politics and society, these passionate idealists accelerated the movement to a revolutionary fervor, but let their internal fears and confusion somehow get in their way.

In this irreverent new genre-bending piece, theatre makers Christopher Chen and Lee Sunday Evans apply their playful imaginations to the work of a Chinese dissident artist. This hybrid work instigates an exploration into the nature of authority and authenticity, inviting you to navigate the labyrinthine relationships between truth and perception, illusionary art and real jeopardy.

Mike Iveson Sci-Fi World Premiere to Play The Kitchen in May

The Kitchen is pleased to present The Tear Drinkers, the second musical work from beloved performer and Bessie-Award-winning composer Mike Iveson. The Tear Drinkers is a suite of sci-fi songs for six performers and piano; it follows four humans who have been abducted by the United States government and brought to an underground holding tank in New Mexico, so that the government can determine which of them is actually an alien from another planet masquerading as an earthling. Downtown performer Mike Iveson leads a team of exceptional artists, including pioneering video artist Charles Atlas, in a look at the private heartaches and private bathroom rituals of humans and aliens alike.

Clare Barron's I'LL NEVER LOVE AGAIN to Run 2/24-3/19 at Bushwick Starr

The Bushwick Starr is proud to present Obie Award-winning playwright Clare Barron's newest work, the world premiere of I'LL NEVER LOVE AGAIN (a chamber piece), part concert and part archaeological dig about first love, first heartbreak, and how those formative teenage experiences haunt the rest of our lives. I'LL NEVER LOVE AGAIN is created from Barron's actual teenage diary and performed by a chorus of downtown's finest. We track the emotional ups-and-downs of 'Clare' as she goes through her very first relationship. It's a chance to spend some time in a real-life teenage brain and with real-life teenage artifacts (drawings from Clare's journals, the actual purple iridescent choir robes from her high school, her baby teeth...) but the goal is to jog the audience's memories and inspire their own personal reflection. Do you remember your first cup of coffee? Or how intense it was the first time you took your pants off with someone? Or all the things you promised yourself before you got distracted by the Adult World?
