Sharif Atkins Stars in NBT and CTH's DUTCHMAN, Now thru 5/23

Actor Sharif Atkins ('White Collar,' 'Hawaii,' 'ER') will star as Clay in the co-production of 'Dutchman' by LeRoi Jones (Amiri Baraka) by Dr. Barbara Ann Teer's National Black Theatre (NBT) and The Classical Theatre of Harlem (CTH). The two theater companies are mounting the production 50 years after the March 1964 world premiere of the play at the Cherry Lane Theatre and in tribute to the late theater great Baraka, who died on January 9. Ambien Mitchell stars opposite Atkins as Lula and Lorenzo Scott joins the cast as the Conductor. Previews of the Carl Cofield-directed show begin tonight, April 30 and run through May 2, and performances run from May 3 through May 23 at National Black Theatre in Harlem.

Trusty Sidekick Theater Company to Present CAMPFIRE at University Settlement, 5/10 & 17

The Performance Project @ University Settlement and Trusty Sidekick Theater Company (TSTC) will co-present the world premiere production of Campfire-- a new play developed specifically for audiences from ages 2 to 5. The production will run for two consecutive Saturdays (May 10 and 17) with performances at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. at Speyer Hall in the University Settlement, located at 184 Eldridge Street, New York, NY 10002.

Rachel Dickstein, Jeremy Bloom & More Chosen for Drama League's 2014 Artist Residency Program

The Drama League (Gabriel Shanks, Executive Director; Roger T. Danforth, Artistic Director) has announced the ten artists and theater ensembles chosen to develop new plays and musicals as part of the 2014 Artist Residency Program. The development of these works, which include two 2014 Artists In Residence, Rachel Dickstein/Ripe Time and Jeremy Bloom/Rady&Bloom, will be held at The Drama League Theater Center (32 Avenue of the Americas) in Tribeca from March-July 2014.

Columbia Stages will present THE SEVEN by Will Power, directed by Carl Cofield. A third-year MFA Director at Columbia University School of the Arts, Cofield has selected this unique and challenging piece to serve as his introduction to the professional New York City theatre community. In the spirit of greenness, The Tank Theater NYC is turning off the power for 3 days to create The Dark Festival. With no lights, no power to the stage, just the performers and audience in the dark, The Tank is celebrating innovative performance that utilizes self-sufficient and alternative energy sources. Whether we use batteries or a treadmill, we're presenting original performance works that are performed independently of our electricity. Ranging from 10-15 minutes in length, The Dark Festival will feature an evening of various pieces that will culminate into a full festival of unique and innovative performance in every discipline.

Ball Center for Creative Inquiry as they present a concert reading of their original musical, 'The Circus in Winter', inspired by Cathy Day's novel of the same title. The story follows Wallace Porter, a young and country-raised stable owner as he acquires a disheveled circus and menagerie. Set while the circus is winter-quartered in Lima, Indiana, Porter and company consider notions of risk, redemption and rebirth through relationships as graceful and perilous as an acrobat's high-flying routine.
