BWW REVIEW: Ogunquit's VICTOR/VICTORIA Says Vive la Difference
by Jan Nargi - Jul 9, 2015

VICTOR/VICTORIA's gender-bending exploration of sexual identity and orientation may have seemed fresh, even daring, in 1982, but by the time it hit Broadway in 1995 it was already a bit tame. Today in a 20th anniversary production at Maine's Ogunquit Playhouse, it feels downright quaint when compared to the courage of Caitlyn Jenner and the recent Supreme Court ruling finally making Marriage Equality the law of the land.

Pacific Symphony Orchestra to Present SYMPHONY IN THE CITIES Concerts, 7/18
by Matt Smith - Jul 8, 2015

Orange County, Calif.—July 7, 2015—“Symphony in the Cities” is not only the perfect way to end a lazy summer day, but it's also Pacific Symphony's way of saying thanks to the community by throwing a big party with music for its Orange County neighbors! Each summer, thousands gather with their loved ones to enjoy listening to the orchestra in a relaxed outdoor setting. This season, in addition to patriotic fare and classical pieces, Music Director Carl St.Clair has invited five singers to pay tribute to the famous von Trapps by performing memorable songs from one of the most beloved musicals of all time, “The Sound of Music.” Members of the audience also have a special opportunity to decide which of three well-known excerpts they would like to hear: Dvorák's Symphony No. 9, “From the New World,” Mozart's “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (A Little Night Music),” or Beethoven's Symphony No. 5. Families are encouraged to bring picnics, blankets and chairs and arrive early for the Symphony's Musical Playground and city festivities.

BWW Reviews: MARY POPPINS at BDT Stage
by colin roybal - Jul 3, 2015

'Mary Poppins' is a film classic that children of all ages have enjoyed for many years. It is a lighthearted, whimsical tale of a pair of unruly children who are taught the value of order, morality, and family love by a magical nanny who floats into their lives by way of a gust of wind. I was so enamored of Mary Poppins' magic, that as a child I was convinced that singing and snapping my fingers would magically make my chores complete. Alas, things are always sweeter and brighter in Disney films. Such is the case for the stage production of Mary Poppins, which strays from the Julie Andrews version of the tale that we all grew up with from the movie. Instead, some of the darker elements from the P.L. Travers books that Mary Poppins was torn from are included in the musical, and add just the right amount of bitter to the sweetness.

BWW Reviews: Skylark Opera Offers Two Different but Equally Satisfying Music-Theater Shows in their Annual Summer Festival
by Jill Schafer - Jun 16, 2015

One of the theatrical highlights of the summer, Skylark Opera's Annual Summer Festival, is upon us! As usual, the two shows playing in repertoire include one that's more of a traditional opera (but always in English) and one that skews a bit more towards musical theater: Puccini's LA RONDINE and the Sondheim musical revue PUTTING IT TOGETHER (put together by Sondheim himself). As someone who loves musical theater but doesn't venture into the world of opera very often, Skylark's Summer Festival offers a fun, easy, accessible way to enjoy to dip my toes into the opera scene and indulge my love of musical theater. Both shows are highly entertaining with excellent casts and orchestras. But the runs are short with just four performances of each show. So read on, take your pick, and get your tickets before this all-too-brief Summer Festival is gone like the all-too-brief Minnesota summer!
