Downtown Urban Arts Festival Kicks Off Next Month

The DOWNTOWN URBAN ARTS FESTIVAL will present 16 plays (nine shorts and seven one-acts.) The festival kicks off on Friday, May 5 and Saturday, May 6 when Savion Glover and Reg E. Gaines (Bring in da Noise Bring in da Funk) make a much-anticipated return to The Public Theater with the centerpiece production If Trane Wuz Here.

Poetic Theater Productions has announced their annual festival of new poetic theater, Poetic License: Renewal. In honor of a new decade, and in celebration of 10 years of poetic theater, this year's festival will feature live performances from Wednesday, March 4th through Sunday, March 8th at the Wild Project, located at 195 East 3rd Street. The 2020 Poetic License festival will highlight poetry and theatrical collaborations that place an emphasis on this year's theme - renewal - evoking that which makes us new, fresh, or strong again.

In the shadow of the threat of war, a new leader has used his charm and treachery to win the crown and the Queen. Prince Hamlet returns home to an unrecognizable political landscape, and is compelled by an apparition to avenge his father's death. Paralyzed by the task ahead, he rages against the impossibility of his predicament. Meanwhile the new King is much less ambivalent in plotting Hamlet's death, and Denmark is thrown into turmoil with devastating consequences.
