Experiments in Opera -- the composer-driven collective with an air of mad scientists in the lab -- opens its 2015-16 season with the premiere of 11 new commissions for ensemble and voice in The Travel Agency is On Fire: Burroughs Cuts Up the Great Bards, presented Friday, October 16, 2015 at the East Village avant-garde haven The Stone. Two sets take place at 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. Each set features different songs.

One of the great choreographers of the modern age, Twyla Tharp, brings her 50th Anniversary program to The Wallis in a historic debut presentation which includes the world premieres of 'Preludes and Fugues,' set to the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and 'Yowzie,' set to a compilation of American jazz arranged by Henry Butler and Steve Bernstein. The Wallis, along with four other performing arts centers across the country, is a co-commissioner of the new work.

The work will premiere in Dallas at the AT&T Performing Arts Center Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House on September 18 and 19, launching Tharp's Fiftieth Anniversary Tour. The 10-week North American tour will celebrate Tharp's five decades of dance-making for both modern and ballet companies, television, the Broadway stage and Hollywood films.

Composer Paola Prestini, the Creative and Executive Director of National Sawdust (NS), today announced programming for the non-profit's inaugural fall season in its new home-a $16 million, 13,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art chamber hall in the heart of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The performance and recording venue, designed by Brooklyn-based architecture firm Bureau V in the shell of century-old former sawdust factory, will provide composers and musicians a setting in which they can flourish, and a place where they are given commissioning support, mentoring and other critical resources essential to create, and then share, their work. For audiences-serious fans and casual listeners alike-the venue will be a place to discover genre-spanning music at accessible ticket prices.
