The Des Moines Community Playhouse presents the Tony Award winning musical, 'Hairspray,' July 15-Aug. 7, 2011.

Singer/actress Nikki Blonsky truly embodies that notion of overnight success. Plucked from obscurity at age 17, then-newcomer Blonsky beat out hundreds of young girls from a nationwide open casting call to land the coveted lead role in the big-screen adaptation of the hit Broadway musical HAIRSPRAY. On July 15-16, she will be slipping back into familiar territory as she joins MEN ALIVE: The Orange County Gay Men's Chorus for their 10th Anniversary Concert 'GREASY HAIRSPRAY' at the Irvine Barclay Theatre.

Chanhassen Dinner Theatres brings its audiences another new Main Stage show with contagiously delightful Broadway musical, HAIRSPRAY! The John W. Engeman Theater is proud to announce the cast and creative team for Hairspray, the first show of their 5th Season. Previews begin on Thursday, July 7, 2011 at 8:00 p.m., officially opening on July 9, 2011 at 8:00 p.m. and running through August 28, 2011. Bryn Mawr College's Performing Arts Series moves into high gear for the 2011-2012 season as it presents five music, dance, and theatre performances that have never been seen or heard in the region. With the summer now in full swing and families on the lookout for activities to fill the hot summer evenings, The Way Off Broadway Dinner Theatre is announcing a 'Family Summer Savings' deal for its current production of the musical Hairspray. For Friday evening and Sunday matinee performances between July 15th and August 25th, with the purchase of 1 Regular Priced Adult ticket, the younger family members get a discount on their ticket prices. Tickets for children 12 and younger will then be $20 (regularly $32) and 13 to 17 year olds will be $25 (regularly $42).

'Hairspray' opens at Chattanooga Theatre Centre on July 1st and runs through the 24th, 2011. The Broadway musical is written by Thomas Meehan and Mark O'Donnell with music and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Whitman. This musical is based on the 1988 film of the same name by John Waters and is based on Water's experiences growing up in Baltimore.

The Way Off Broadway Dinner Theatre's 2011 Season continues this summer when it brings the smash hit musical comedy Hairspray to the stage. Hairspray is another in a line of shows that have had their regional or area premiere at Way Off Broadway.

Fortunately, Toby's has the right Kira in Heather Marie Beck. In her game willingness to clown rather than just be pretty and sound lovely, she reminds me a bit of Cameron Diaz. I will long treasure the memory of her staggering along, one skate on and one skate off, as she doggedly makes her escape from a too-importunate Sonny. Beck may know, and we may know, that the character looks ridiculous, but the character doesn't know; that's real comedy.

Random Unrelated Projects, the first feature film by award-winning independent filmmaker/playwright Aaron Mark (Zbornik Developing, Commentary), featuring a cast of Broadway veterans, will be screened on Saturday, July 2nd at 9:00 PM at Anthology Film Archives as part of NewFilmmakers New York (newfilmmakers.com).
